HRE - Harare

How Much Does It Cost to Get from Harare Airport to the City?

The cost of getting from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to central Harare depends on which transport option you choose and, if taking a taxi, how well you negotiate.

Price breakdown by option

Pre-booked private transfer (sedan): $25-$35 USD. This is a fixed price agreed at booking. No surprises at the airport.

Pre-booked SUV or larger vehicle: $35-$50 USD. Worth it if you have more than two large bags or are traveling as a group of 3-4.

Airport taxi (negotiated on the spot): $30-$50 USD to the city centre. Drivers start high and expect you to counter. If you are quoted above $40 for a standard sedan to the centre, that is above the going rate.

Hotel shuttle: Some hotels include airport pickup in the room rate. Others charge $20-$40 USD. Ask when booking your hotel.

Currency matters

Zimbabwe operates a dual-currency system. USD is widely accepted and preferred by most transport providers. If you are paying in Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG), confirm the exchange rate being used before agreeing. The parallel market rate and official rate can differ, and this affects what you actually pay.

Carrying small USD notes ($1, $5, $10) is helpful for tipping and exact payment. Getting change for a $50 or $100 note from a taxi driver is not always easy.

What affects the price

  • Time of day: Late night arrivals (after 10 PM) will generally cost 20-30% more for taxis, since fewer drivers are available and they know it.
  • Destination within Harare: Prices above are for the city centre (Avondale, central business district). Going further out to suburbs like Borrowdale or Mount Pleasant may add $5-$15.
  • Vehicle type: A basic sedan is cheaper than an SUV. If you do not need the space, do not pay for it.
  • Negotiation: With taxis, your first quote is not the final price. Polite but firm negotiation is normal and expected.

Tipping

Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated. For a pre-booked transfer where the driver is helpful with bags and provides a smooth ride, $2-$5 USD is a reasonable tip. For taxis where you have already negotiated the fare, tipping is less common but rounding up is a nice gesture.

Bottom line

Budget $25-$45 USD for the airport-to-city journey. A pre-booked transfer at the lower end of that range gives you the best combination of fair pricing and certainty. If you are comfortable negotiating and arriving during daytime, a taxi works too — just know the fair range before you start the conversation.
