Hong Kong International Airport is modern, efficient, and surprisingly manageable with kids. The challenge is the distance to the city (35km). Here's how to handle it.
Child car seat rules in Hong Kong
Hong Kong law requires children under 3 to use a child restraint in private vehicles. However:
- Taxis are exempt — children can ride without car seats in licensed taxis
- Private transfers can provide car seats on request
- The Airport Express train doesn't require them (obviously)
Best transport for families
Airport Express (works great for families)
- Cost: HK$115 per adult to Central, free for children under 3, half-price for 3-11
- Time: 24 minutes — short enough that kids won't get restless
- Space: Wide seats, luggage racks, clean
- Hotel shuttle: Free buses from Hong Kong and Kowloon stations to 40+ hotels
- Strollers: Easily brought on board
- Best for: Families going to Central or Kowloon hotel areas
Pre-booked transfer
- Cost: HK$450-800 depending on vehicle size
- Why: Door-to-door, child seats, luggage help, English-speaking driver
- Vehicle: Can book 7-seater MPV for larger families
- Best for: Large families, lots of luggage, need car seats
Taxi
- Cost: HK$250-400 to most destinations
- Good for: Families of 3-4 with manageable luggage
- Limitation: Limited trunk space, no child seats, language barrier possible
- Tip: Have hotel name in Chinese characters ready to show the driver
Airport family facilities
HKG is one of the best airports in the world for families:
- Nursery rooms with baby changing, bottle warming, and breastfeeding areas
- Children's play areas (though mostly airside, not in arrivals)
- Family washrooms throughout
- Pharmacy and baby supplies available at shops
- Free Wi-Fi for entertainment
- Luggage carts — free and plentiful
The Hotel Shuttle Bus trick
This is a great hack for families. After taking the Airport Express to Hong Kong or Kowloon station, free shuttle buses (K1-K5 and H1-H5 routes) run to major hotels. These are comfortable buses with room for luggage.
Check the MTR website before your trip to see if your hotel is on a shuttle route. If it is, the Airport Express + shuttle combo gives you a door-to-door experience for just HK$115.
Luggage reality
| Family size | Luggage | Best option | |---|---|---| | 2 adults + 1 child | 2 bags + stroller | Airport Express or taxi | | 2 adults + 2 children | 3 bags + stroller | Taxi or MPV transfer | | 2 adults + 3+ children | 4+ bags + strollers | MPV transfer | | Large family group | 5+ bags | Van transfer |
Disneyland option
If you're heading to Hong Kong Disneyland, it's on Lantau Island — the same island as the airport. A taxi takes just 15-20 minutes and costs HK$120-160. Alternatively, take the MTR (Airport Express to Tsing Yi, then Tung Chung Line and Disneyland Resort Line).
Weather and comfort
Hong Kong is subtropical — hot and humid from May to September (30-35°C with high humidity). The airport is fully air-conditioned, but the walk to taxis and buses involves brief outdoor exposure. Have water ready for kids.
From November to February, temperatures are pleasant (15-22°C) and humidity is lower.
