Getting from Hong Kong Airport with kids and family

Hong Kong International Airport is on Lantau Island, about 35 km from the city centre. Here is how to handle the journey with children.

Child seats

Since 1 November 2025, children in private cars in Hong Kong must use a child restraining device: under 8 years old and under 1.35 m tall means a child seat is required. That rule is written for private cars. The Transport Department pages do not set out a child-seat rule for taxis, and taxis do not carry child seats, so if you need one, book a private transfer and request it when booking.

Best transport for families

Airport Express

• Cost: HK$120 per adult to Central with Octopus, HK$60 for children aged 3-11, free for children under 3
• Time: 24 minutes to the city centre, trains every 10 minutes
• Free in-town check-in at the city stations for your return flight
• Hotel shuttles: some hotels run their own shuttle from Hong Kong, Kowloon and Tsing Yi stations (MTR lists 11 hotels; the service is operated by the hotels, so ask yours)

Pre-booked transfer

• Cost: a fixed price, quoted before you book and varying with vehicle size
• Why: door-to-door, child seats on request, driver meets you in arrivals (if included in your booking)
• Suits: large families, lots of luggage, young children

Taxi

• Cost: metered on the government tariff (HK$29 for the first 2 km, then HK$2.1 per 200 m, HK$1.4 once the fare passes HK$102.5), plus HK$6 per piece of luggage and any tolls
• Limitation: no child seats
• Tip: have the hotel name in Chinese characters ready to show the driver

Airport family facilities

The airport has 39 nursing rooms with changing and feeding facilities, 16 of them in Terminal 1, including several on the Arrivals Level (L5), near Arrival Gate 61, Arrival Gate 5 and in the Arrivals Hall.

Hotel shuttle option

MTR lists a hotel shuttle service from Hong Kong, Kowloon and Tsing Yi stations, operated by 11 designated hotels. At Hong Kong Station the waiting area is on Level 2, left side; at Kowloon Station take the escalator or lift down to Level G and follow signs to the waiting area at Exit B. Check with your hotel whether it is on the list and the timetable.

Disneyland option

Hong Kong Disneyland is on Lantau Island, the same island as the airport. By MTR, take the Airport Express to Tsing Yi, change to the Tung Chung Line to Sunny Bay, then board the Disneyland Resort Line. By taxi, look for a blue Lantau taxi and ask to be dropped at the Disneyland Public Transport Interchange.
