Cartagena Airport receives international flights from the US and Panama that sometimes land between 10 PM and midnight. Domestic flights from Bogota can also arrive late. The airport is small, and late-night operations wind down quickly — but getting to your hotel is still straightforward.
What is available after 10 PM
| Option | Availability | Notes | |--------|-------------|-------| | Official taxi | Available | Dispatch counter operates for all arriving flights | | Uber/InDriver | Limited | Fewer drivers, may take longer to match | | Pre-booked transfer | Available | Driver waiting regardless of the hour | | Public bus | Not available | Stops running in the evening |
The official taxi dispatch operates as long as flights are arriving. This is your most reliable option. The fixed-rate system works the same at midnight as it does at noon — pay at the counter, get your voucher, board your assigned taxi.
Safety at night
Cartagena is generally safe for tourists in the main areas (Walled City, Bocagrande, Getsemani), but common sense applies at night:
- Use the official taxi counter — do not accept rides from people approaching you in the arrivals hall
- Keep your phone and valuables out of sight during the ride
- Have your hotel address written down or on your phone screen
- The ride is only 10–20 minutes, so you will be at your hotel quickly
The Old Town drop-off at night
If you are staying inside the Walled City, remember that your taxi drops you at the nearest car-accessible point. Walking the last stretch over cobblestones at midnight with luggage is less pleasant than during the day — the streets are darker and less busy.
Some hotels can arrange for someone to meet you at the drop-off point. Call or message them before you land if arriving after 10 PM.
Pre-booked transfer advantages at night
A pre-booked transfer at COP 40,000–80,000 (EUR 8–16) is only marginally more than a taxi but provides:
- A driver monitoring your flight for delays
- A name board at arrivals — no searching or negotiating
- An air-conditioned, newer vehicle
- Often a driver with basic English
Practical tips
- Withdraw cash from the ATMs inside the terminal before exiting — you need COP 30,000–50,000 for a taxi
- Save your hotel address and phone number offline on your phone
- The terminal has seating and restrooms if you need to regroup after landing
- Currency exchange counters may be closed late — use the ATMs
