Cotonou Airport is only 5 km from the city centre. There are no meters on the taxis and no authority publishes an airport tariff, so this page cannot honestly give you a price list — the fare is whatever you and the driver agree, and any number printed here would be a figure a driver could simply argue with.

Expect a driver's opening number to be well above what a resident pays. The single best thing you can do is ask your hotel, on the day, what a fair fare to their address currently is — they answer this every week and they have no reason to inflate it. That is worth more than any figure printed in a guide, because printed figures are exactly what a driver will argue with.
How negotiation works
There are no meters in Cotonou taxis. The process is straightforward:
1. State your destination clearly (in French if possible) 2. The driver names a price — usually inflated 3. Counter with a number you got from your hotel, not from a guidebook 4. Meet somewhere reasonable, or try the next driver
Having roughly the right amount in small notes speeds this up. If you offer a fare and the driver can see you are only carrying one large note, your position weakens. Break large notes at the airport exchange counter.
Hidden costs and considerations
No toll roads between the airport and central Cotonou. The only additional cost is the negotiation premium if you are not firm.
Late-night premium: after 21:00, fewer drivers remain and the ones who do know it, so fares rise noticeably. This is supply and demand, not a scam — but it is also unpredictable, which is the argument for pre-booking a late arrival.
Currency peg advantage: The XOF is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 655.957 XOF = 1 EUR. This means exchange rates are predictable. Avoid exchanging at unofficial money changers outside the airport — the rate may look better but counterfeit notes are a risk.
Is a private transfer worth it?
Over 5 km the premium for a private transfer is modest against a well-negotiated taxi — and unlike the taxi, you know it before you land. What you gain is a guaranteed air-conditioned vehicle, no negotiation, and a driver who is expecting you. Many experienced travellers are fine with a taxi for such a short hop. For first-time visitors to West Africa, the transfer removes the most stressful part of the arrival.
