Getting from Christchurch Airport with Kids and Family

Last updated: March 2026

Christchurch Airport is small, well-organized, and easy to navigate with children. The trip to the city is short. But there are a few New Zealand-specific things families should know.

Biosecurity with kids

New Zealand's biosecurity screening is thorough and cannot be skipped. Every bag is screened, and you may be asked about food, outdoor gear, or items that touched soil. With children, this adds time — allow 30–60 minutes from landing to exiting the terminal.

If your children have snacks from the plane, declare them. Undeclared food can result in a NZD 400 (EUR 222) instant fine, and officers do check.

The car seat situation

New Zealand law requires approved child restraints for children under 7. However, taxis and ride-share vehicles are legally exempt from this requirement. This means drivers are not breaking the law by not having seats, but it also means you are traveling without child restraints unless you arrange them yourself.

Your options:

  • Pre-book a transfer and request a car seat — the most reliable option
  • Rent a car and add a child seat from the rental company for NZD 10–15/day (EUR 5.50–8.30/day)
  • Bring your own travel car seat or booster
  • Take a taxi without one — legal but not ideal for safety

Best transport options for families

| Family size | Recommended | Expected cost | |-------------|-------------|---------------| | 2 adults + 1 child, 2 bags | Taxi or pre-booked sedan | NZD 45–85 (EUR 25–47) | | 2 adults + 2 children, 3 bags | Pre-booked sedan or van | NZD 55–130 (EUR 31–72) | | 2 adults + 3 children, 4+ bags | Pre-booked van | NZD 85–130 (EUR 47–72) | | Large family (6+ people) | Pre-booked van | NZD 100–150 (EUR 56–83) |

Can families use the bus?

The Purple Line #29 to the city center is technically an option, but it is not ideal with children and luggage. The bus has limited luggage space and no dedicated stroller area. During peak hours, it can be standing room only. If you are traveling light with older children, it works. For families with young kids, car seats, and multiple bags, a taxi or transfer is more practical.

The rental car option

Many families visiting Christchurch are starting a South Island road trip. In that case, picking up a rental car at the airport makes the most sense. All major companies are in the arrivals hall. You can add child seats and booster seats at the counter. The drive to the city center is 15–20 minutes on easy, well-signed roads.

Remember: New Zealand drives on the left side of the road.

Tips for families

  • Request car seats 48 hours in advance if pre-booking a transfer
  • Declare all food at biosecurity — including children's snacks
  • Use the restroom inside the terminal before heading out
  • The airport is compact — the walk from arrivals to the taxi rank is under 2 minutes
  • Weather varies wildly in Canterbury — have layers ready even in summer
  • Buy a Metrocard at the i-SITE desk if you plan to use buses during your stay
