Taxi vs Pre-Booked Transfer at Jakarta Airport: Which One to Choose?

Last updated: March 2026

Getting from Soekarno-Hatta to central Jakarta by road takes 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. The real question is which road option suits your situation. Here is a straightforward comparison.

When the taxi wins

Blue Bird taxis are the safe, reliable default in Jakarta. If you arrive during off-peak hours, have moderate luggage, and are comfortable with a metered fare, a Blue Bird is hard to beat. The drivers are professional, vehicles are well-maintained, and the meter is honest.

The key advantage: no app needed, no booking needed. Walk to the taxi rank, get in a Blue Bird, go. In off-peak traffic, you will pay around IDR 200,000–250,000 (EUR 11–14) plus tolls to reach central Jakarta.

Avoid non-Blue Bird taxis unless you are experienced with Jakarta transport — meter tampering is rare but not unheard of with less reputable companies.

When Grab/Gojek wins

Grab and Gojek give you upfront pricing — you see the fare before confirming. During off-peak hours, this can be cheaper than a metered taxi. Cashless payment is convenient if you have not exchanged money yet.

The downside is surge pricing. During peak arrivals (afternoon and evening), the quoted fare can exceed what a metered taxi would charge. Always compare the Grab quote to the expected taxi fare before deciding.

Both apps work well at CGK, with designated pickup zones at each terminal.

When a pre-booked transfer wins

Pre-booking makes the most sense when:

  • You arrive between 23:00 and 05:00, when Grab availability drops and taxi queues thin out
  • You travel with a family and need a car seat or larger vehicle
  • You are heading to a destination far from central Jakarta and want a fixed price agreed in advance
  • You are a first-time visitor to Jakarta and prefer to skip the learning curve of navigating transport in one of the world's most congested cities
  • You have heavy or bulky luggage that needs a van

The premium is IDR 100,000–200,000 (EUR 6–11) over a metered taxi. For that, you get a driver waiting in the arrivals hall, a guaranteed vehicle, tolls included, and no surprises.

What about the train?

The Railink airport train is not a taxi or transfer — it is a separate option that beats all road transport on both price and speed. If you are traveling light and heading to central Jakarta, it is the best choice during operating hours (06:20–23:20). But it only goes to Sudirman Baru station, so you will need onward transport from there.
