Getting from Jakarta Airport with Kids and Family

Last updated: April 2026

Soekarno-Hatta is one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia, and arriving here with children requires a bit of planning. Here is what families need to know.

The airport experience with kids

Terminal 3 (international) is modern and spacious with air conditioning, clean restrooms, and baby-changing facilities. Immigration queues can be long — 30–60 minutes during peak periods — so prepare entertainment for young children.

After baggage claim, free luggage carts are available in the Terminal 3 arrivals area. There are food outlets and convenience stores if you need snacks or water before heading out.

The Skytrain connecting terminals is free and can be fun for kids, but it is not necessary unless you need to reach a different terminal.

The car seat problem

As with most of Southeast Asia, child car seats are not standard in Indonesian taxis, Grab, or Gojek vehicles. Indonesia has child restraint laws, but enforcement in taxis is virtually nonexistent and supply is zero.

Your options:

  • Bring your own portable car seat or booster and install it in the vehicle
  • Pre-book a transfer and request a car seat when booking — this is the only reliable way
  • Travel without one — this is common practice locally, but the decision is yours

Best transport options for families

Family sizeRecommendedExpected cost
2 adults + 1 child, 2 bagsBlue Bird taxi or pre-booked sedanIDR 200,000–500,000 (EUR 11–28)
2 adults + 2 children, 3 bagsPre-booked sedan or vanIDR 300,000–700,000 (EUR 17–40)
2 adults + 3 children, 4+ bagsPre-booked vanIDR 450,000–700,000 (EUR 25–40)
Large family group (6+ people)Pre-booked van or minibusIDR 600,000–1,000,000 (EUR 34–57)

Can families use the airport train?

The Railink train to Sudirman Baru is comfortable and air-conditioned, with enough space for a stroller. Children under 3 ride free; ages 3–12 pay the full IDR 70,000 (EUR 4) fare. However, the train is only practical if:

  • You can manage your luggage on and off the train without help
  • Your hotel is near Sudirman Baru station or easily reached by a short taxi
  • Your children can handle the walk through the station and a potential transfer

For most families with significant luggage, a door-to-door option (taxi or transfer) is simpler.

Jakarta traffic with kids

This is the biggest challenge. A ride to central Jakarta can take 90–120 minutes during rush hour. For children, that is a long time in a car after a long flight. If you arrive during peak hours (07:00–09:00 or 17:00–20:00), consider:

  • Taking the Railink train to skip traffic entirely
  • Waiting 30–60 minutes at the airport for traffic to ease (there is plenty to keep kids occupied)
  • Having snacks, water, and entertainment ready for a long car ride

Tips for families

  • Book a van if you have more than 2 large suitcases plus a stroller — do not try to squeeze everything into a sedan
  • Have Indonesian rupiah ready for small purchases — many airport vendors and taxis prefer cash
  • Use the restroom before leaving the terminal — the drive can be very long in traffic
  • Download offline maps in case your mobile data is not working immediately
  • Request a car seat at least 48 hours before arrival if pre-booking a transfer
