Soekarno-Hatta handles flights around the clock, and many international arrivals land between 22:00 and 05:00. The good news about arriving late in Jakarta: no traffic. Here is what to expect.
What is available after 23:00
| Option | Available? | Notes | |--------|-----------|-------| | Railink airport train | No | Last departure 23:20 | | Blue Bird taxi | Yes | Available 24 hours at the taxi rank | | Grab/Gojek | Limited | Fewer drivers, but not impossible | | DAMRI bus | Very limited | Most routes stop by 22:00–23:00 | | Pre-booked transfer | Yes | Driver waits regardless of time |
The silver lining: empty roads
Jakarta's traffic is legendary — during the day, the 25 km ride to the city can take 2 hours. After midnight, the same ride takes 35–45 minutes. This is genuinely one of the best times to make the journey. You will cruise down empty toll roads and reach your hotel faster than any daytime arrival.
A metered Blue Bird taxi at midnight will cost around IDR 180,000–250,000 (EUR 10–14) plus tolls — actually cheaper than a daytime ride because there is less time on the meter.
The taxi situation at night
Blue Bird taxis are available at the official taxi rank 24 hours a day. The queue of passengers thins out after midnight, so you may actually get a cab faster than during the day. The drivers know the empty roads and the ride will be smooth.
The only risk is that if many flights land simultaneously (which happens around 01:00–03:00 when Middle Eastern and East Asian flights cluster), the taxi supply might momentarily fall short. You might wait 10–20 minutes.
Grab and Gojek at night
Both apps continue to work after midnight, but driver availability drops. You may see higher wait times (15–30 minutes) or occasional cancellations. If the app shows a reasonable fare and a nearby driver, go for it. But do not stake your entire plan on it — have the taxi rank as a backup.
Is the airport safe at night?
Yes. Terminal 3 is well-lit and staffed around the clock. Security is present, and there are convenience stores and a few food outlets that stay open. You will not feel unsafe waiting inside the terminal at any hour.
The area around the taxi rank is also supervised. Avoid accepting rides from unofficial drivers or touts who approach you inside the terminal.
The case for pre-booking
If you know your flight arrives after 23:00, a pre-booked transfer eliminates all uncertainty. The driver monitors your flight for delays, waits in the arrivals hall, and takes you directly to your hotel. Cost: IDR 300,000–500,000 (EUR 17–28) to central Jakarta.
Compared to a late-night Blue Bird taxi at IDR 180,000–250,000 plus tolls, you are paying roughly IDR 80,000–200,000 (EUR 4.50–11) more. Whether that premium is worth it depends on your comfort level. For first-time visitors to Jakarta arriving at 02:00, the peace of mind is real.
Tips for late night arrivals
- Withdraw rupiah from ATMs inside the terminal — you will need cash for a taxi
- The Railink train's last departure is 23:20 — if your flight lands at 23:00, you will almost certainly miss it after immigration
- Download your hotel address offline in case mobile data is not working
- Enjoy the empty roads — this is genuinely the fastest and cheapest time to travel by road in Jakarta
- Set realistic expectations for your hotel — some budget hotels lock their doors after midnight, so confirm late check-in
