Budapest Airport: Taxi or private transfer?

Last updated: March 2026

Budapest Airport has a solid official taxi system now, so the old horror stories about scam taxi drivers are mostly history. But there are still good reasons to consider a transfer. Let's compare honestly.

Price comparison

| Destination | Official taxi | Private transfer | |---|---|---| | Pest center (District V-VII) | 8,000-9,500 HUF (21-25 EUR) | 25-35 EUR | | Buda center (District I, II) | 9,500-11,000 HUF (25-29 EUR) | 30-40 EUR | | Keleti Station | 7,500-9,000 HUF (20-24 EUR) | 25-35 EUR | | Gellert area | 10,000-12,000 HUF (26-31 EUR) | 32-42 EUR | | Budaors / suburbs | 7,000-8,000 HUF (18-21 EUR) | 28-38 EUR |

Taxis are typically 5-10 EUR cheaper for the same route. The question is whether the extras a transfer offers are worth that difference.

When the taxi wins

  • You're traveling solo or as a couple — quick, easy, fair price
  • You don't want to plan — just walk to the rank and go
  • You're comfortable with local currency — having HUF or a card is enough
  • Daytime arrival — the system works smoothly, dispatchers are efficient
Budapest's airport taxi system is genuinely good now. Zone pricing means no tricks with the meter. The dispatcher gives you a printed receipt before you get in the car. Cars are clean and drivers are professional.

When the transfer wins

  • You're a family with kids — child seats available, minivan option, driver helps with everything
  • You're 4+ people — a minivan transfer at 40-55 EUR beats squeezing into one taxi or taking two
  • You want to pay in EUR — transfers are priced and charged in EUR, no currency hassle
  • Late night arrival — guaranteed driver waiting, flight tracking, no uncertainty
  • First time in Budapest — the meet-and-greet at arrivals takes all the stress out
  • You hate queues — at busy times (summer evenings), the taxi rank can have a 10-20 minute wait

The scam question

Let's address it directly: Budapest had a terrible reputation for taxi scams. That era is mostly over. The airport uses Fotaxi (now Bolt) exclusively, with zone pricing and dispatchers. The risk of getting scammed at the official rank is very low.

However: If someone approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride, say no. Only use the official rank. The unofficial drivers who hang around arrivals are the last remnants of the old system, and they will overcharge you.

With a pre-booked transfer, this isn't even a concern — your driver is identified, the price is fixed, and everything is handled.

Vehicle quality

Official taxis are mostly Skoda Octavias and similar — clean, functional, air-conditioned. Nothing fancy but perfectly fine.

Transfer companies typically use Mercedes, VW, or similar — slightly nicer vehicles. For business travelers or those wanting more comfort, the upgrade is noticeable.

Language and communication

Hungarian taxi drivers often speak limited English. Usually enough for giving an address, but don't expect a conversation. If your hotel has an unusual name or location, having the address written down (or showing it on your phone) helps a lot.

Transfer drivers are typically selected for their English skills and know the common hotel locations. Less room for communication issues.

Practical tips

  • Official taxi rank only — follow the signs, go to the dispatcher. Never accept an offer from someone inside the terminal
  • Have your address ready — show the driver your hotel address on your phone
  • Card payments — most taxis accept cards but confirm with the dispatcher first
  • Tipping: Not expected in taxis but rounding up is appreciated (e.g., 9,200 HUF fare, give 10,000)
  • Transfer booking: Book at least 12-24 hours ahead. Include your flight number

Our honest take

Budapest's official airport taxis are fair and reliable. For 1-3 people during the day, just take the taxi — it's cheaper and easy. For families, groups, late-night arrivals, or anyone who wants zero hassle, the transfer is worth the extra few euros. The price difference is small enough that comfort and convenience should drive your decision.
