Budapest Airport with kids: getting to your hotel without the chaos

Last updated: March 2026

Budapest is a fantastic family destination — thermal baths kids can splash in, castles to explore, and some of the best ice cream in Europe. Getting from the airport to your hotel with children just needs a little planning.

The 100E bus with kids

The airport bus costs 2,500 HUF (~6.50 EUR) per person, and kids under 6 ride free. It's a direct bus to the city center taking 35-45 minutes. Sounds good on paper.

Reality check: the bus can get very crowded, especially in summer. There's limited luggage space. If you have a stroller, you'll be wrestling it in and off a packed bus while managing kids. Doable for one parent with one older child. Not recommended for the full family.

Taxi with kids

The official taxi rank is right outside arrivals. Quick, easy, fair price. But the standard issue: taxis don't carry child seats. Hungarian law requires child restraints for children under 150cm, but taxi drivers rely on the public transport exemption that applies in some cases.

If your children are older and don't need car seats, the taxi is a solid option at 21-29 EUR to the center. The cars are mostly sedans — comfortable for 2 adults and 1-2 kids with reasonable luggage.

Private transfer with kids (recommended)

For families, a pre-booked transfer is the clear winner:

  • Child seats provided — infant carrier, toddler seat, or booster, just request when booking
  • Minivan available — real space for strollers, luggage, and kids who need room
  • Driver meets you at arrivals — no navigating with kids in tow
  • Fixed price in EUR — no currency confusion or card issues
| Setup | Vehicle | Child seats | Price to city center | |---|---|---|---| | 2 adults + 1 child | Sedan | 1 | 25-35 EUR | | 2 adults + 2 children | Minivan | 2 | 40-55 EUR | | 2 adults + 3 children | Minivan | 2-3 | 45-60 EUR | | Large family / grandparents | Large minivan | As needed | 55-75 EUR |

Stroller and car seat logistics

Budapest Airport is manageable in size. Strollers are returned at the gate or baggage belt — check with your airline. The terminal has elevators, and the walk from arrivals to the taxi rank or transfer pickup is short.

If you're bringing your own car seats, transfer drivers will help install them. If you don't want to lug them through the airport, request seats when booking your transfer — most companies have Maxi-Cosi, forward-facing seats, and boosters.

Where to stay with kids

This affects your transfer choice. Budapest's District V and VII (Pest side) are walkable and fun with kids. The Buda side (near the Castle) is prettier but hillier with less flat walking. Hotels near the Great Market Hall or Varosliget (City Park) are family-friendly zones.

For the Pest side, transfers and taxis are about 21-29 EUR. For the Buda hills, expect 25-35 EUR.

Timing tips

  • Avoid rush hour (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM) if possible — Budapest traffic on the M1/M7 motorway near the airport can be brutal
  • Summer afternoons mean packed 100E buses — another reason to pre-book
  • Late arrivals — the 100E stops around midnight. With tired kids, a transfer waiting at arrivals is priceless

Our advice

For families with young children: book a minivan transfer with child seats. The price difference versus a taxi is minimal (10-20 EUR more), and the peace of mind — guaranteed child seats, spacious vehicle, driver handling the luggage — is absolutely worth it. Budapest is affordable enough that this small splurge won't break the budget.
