Budapest is a party city, so plenty of flights land late. Here's what actually works when you arrive after dark.
What stops running and when
| Transport | Last service | Resumes | |---|---|---| | 100E Airport Bus | ~01:00 | ~04:00 | | 200E Bus | ~23:30 (then night bus 950) | ~04:00 | | Night bus 950 | Runs all night (hourly) | Connects to night trams | | Official taxis | 24/7 | Always available | | Pre-booked transfers | 24/7 | Always available |
The 100E bus at night
The last 100E bus to the city center departs around 1:00 AM. If your flight lands before midnight, you should be able to catch it after baggage claim. But it's a gamble — delays, long passport queues, or slow luggage can eat that window.
The bus itself is fine at night — well-lit, safe, and less crowded than during the day.
Night bus 950
After the 200E stops, bus 950 runs through the night between the airport and Kobanya-Kispest, connecting to night trams. This is an option, but it's slow (hourly frequency), confusing if you don't know Budapest's night transit network, and not practical with luggage. Fine for locals, not great for tourists.
Taxis after midnight
The official taxi rank operates all night. Budapest has enough late flights and party-goers heading home that taxis are always available. The zone pricing stays the same — no night surcharge. You'll pay the same 8,000-11,000 HUF (21-29 EUR) to the center as during the day.
At 2-3 AM, the roads are empty and the ride takes about 20 minutes — faster than daytime.
Pre-booked transfers at night
This is the zero-stress option for late arrivals:
- Your driver tracks your flight — if you land at 2:30 AM instead of 1 AM, they know and adjust
- They wait at arrivals with your name — no searching for taxi ranks while exhausted
- Fixed price, no surcharges — same as daytime booking
- Pre-paid in EUR — no fumbling with HUF at 3 AM
Safety at night
Budapest Airport is safe at any hour — well-lit, security present, 24/7 services. The taxi rank is supervised by a dispatcher.
In the city: Budapest is generally safe at night, but the party district (District VII, ruin bars area) can be rowdy in the early hours. Your hotel area is almost certainly fine. Taxis and transfers take you door-to-door, so there's no concern about walking through unfamiliar streets.
Airport hotels if you'd rather sleep
If you're landing after midnight and need to be somewhere early the next morning, sleeping near the airport might make sense:
- ibis Budapest Airport — 5 minutes by shuttle, from ~50 EUR/night
- Airport Hotel Budapest — walking distance from the terminal, budget option
Our recommendation
For late arrivals at BUD, the taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer are both solid choices. The taxi is slightly cheaper, the transfer slightly more convenient. If your flight lands before midnight, try for the 100E bus — it's cheap and the last one runs around 1 AM. After that, don't bother with night buses unless you know the city well.
