Ashgabat receives several international flights that arrive in the late evening — Turkish Airlines from Istanbul and Flydubai from Dubai are the most common connections for international visitors. If you are arriving after 10 PM, here is what to expect.
The airport at night
The terminal remains operational for arriving flights, and immigration and customs function as normal regardless of the hour. The process may actually be slightly faster at night due to fewer flights. The arrivals hall is well-lit and safe, but quiet — even more so than during the day, which is already quiet by airport standards.
Getting to the city after dark
Ashgabat essentially shuts down in the evening. The wide boulevards are empty, most businesses are closed, and the city takes on an even more surreal quality under its architectural lighting. This is not dangerous — Ashgabat is one of the safest capital cities in the world — but it means transport options thin out considerably.
Official airport taxis are usually available for scheduled international flights, but the number of waiting drivers drops after about 10 PM. If your flight is delayed, you may find few or no taxis at the curb.
Pre-booked transfer is essential
For late-night arrivals, a pre-booked transfer is not just recommended — it is close to essential. Your tour operator should arrange this as part of your itinerary. If you are handling transport independently, confirm with your hotel or transfer service that the driver will wait regardless of flight delays.
The late-night drive
The 15–20 minute drive from the airport to central Ashgabat at night is actually pleasant. The roads are empty, well-maintained, and the city's marble buildings are illuminated. It is one of the more unique late-night airport drives you will experience. There are no safety concerns on the route.
What to have ready
- Your driver's phone number (local Turkmen number)
- Hotel address written in Turkmen or Russian
- Cash in Turkmen Manat (exchange at the airport if the counter is open, or bring USD as backup)
- Your Letter of Invitation and hotel confirmation
If things go wrong
If your pre-booked driver is not there and there are no taxis, airport staff can usually assist with calling a car. Be patient — it may take time. Ashgabat is not a city where you want to wander around at night looking for transport, not because it is unsafe, but because there is simply nothing open and no one around to help on the street.
