ASB - Ashgabat

Traveling through Ashgabat Airport with family and kids

Traveling to Turkmenistan with children is unusual but not unheard of — families visiting on cultural tours or transiting through Ashgabat on a Silk Road itinerary will find the airport modern and the city safe, if a bit surreal.

The terminal

Ashgabat's airport terminal is a massive, marble-clad building that opened in 2016. Inside, it is spacious and clean. For families, the good news is that there is plenty of room to move around, and the terminal is not crowded. The bad news is that there are very few amenities geared toward families — no dedicated play areas, limited food options, and restrooms that are basic.

Immigration with kids

Immigration at Ashgabat can be slow and thorough. Officers may examine each family member's documents individually. Have all passports, visas, and Letters of Invitation easily accessible. Children's documents should be in the same order as the adults'. Patience is important — the process is bureaucratic but not hostile.

Car seats

Child car seats are not standard in Turkmen vehicles — taxis, private cars, or otherwise. If your children require car seats, you need to bring your own. Inform your tour operator or transfer service in advance so they can ensure the vehicle accommodates installation. Do not expect to find car seats available for rent or loan in Ashgabat.

The ride to the city

The drive from the airport to central Ashgabat is about 15–20 minutes on wide, well-maintained boulevards. Ashgabat's roads are notably smooth and clean — the government maintains them meticulously. Traffic is light by any capital city standard. The drive itself is easy on kids, and they may be fascinated by the white marble buildings and golden statues that line the route.

Vehicle considerations

If you are traveling with a stroller, multiple suitcases, and children, a standard sedan taxi may be tight. Request a larger vehicle through your tour operator or transfer service. Specify your luggage count and any car seat requirements at the time of booking.

Practical tips for families

  • Bring your own car seats — they are not available locally
  • Have snacks and water for the immigration wait
  • Keep all travel documents organized and accessible
  • Let your tour operator handle airport pickup — it simplifies everything
  • Ashgabat is very safe for families, but keep cameras discreet (photography of government buildings is restricted)
  • The city has limited child-oriented dining — bring familiar snacks for picky eaters
