Getting from Auckland Airport with children and family

Last updated: February 2026

Travelling with kids adds layers of complexity to the airport-to-hotel leg of any trip. Auckland Airport is manageable with children, but there are things worth knowing before you land.

The terminal with children

After clearing biosecurity and customs, the international arrivals hall is a single open area. There are baby change facilities in the restrooms near arrivals. Luggage trolleys are free and can help when managing bags plus a stroller. The terminal is flat and wheelchair-accessible, which also makes stroller navigation straightforward.

If you have a domestic connection, the walk between terminals takes about 10 minutes along a covered outdoor path. With small children and luggage, take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus instead. It runs every 15 minutes and has space for strollers.

Child seat requirements

New Zealand law requires children under 7 to use an approved child restraint in vehicles. This is strictly enforced. Standard taxis and rideshares do not carry child seats. If you take a taxi with a child under 7, you are technically breaking the law, though enforcement in taxis is inconsistent.

Pre-booked transfers can arrange appropriate child seats (rear-facing, forward-facing, or booster) when you book. Specify the ages of your children at the time of booking so the correct seats are fitted. This is the most reliable way to be compliant and safe.

If you are renting a car, child seats can usually be added to the rental. Book them in advance as they sometimes run out.

Luggage and strollers

Families tend to travel with more bags. A standard taxi sedan fits two large suitcases and a carry-on in the boot. If you have a stroller plus three or four bags, you will need a larger vehicle. Pre-booked transfers let you specify your luggage count so an appropriately sized vehicle is sent. Minivans and larger vehicles are available.

Strollers can be gate-checked and are usually returned at the aircraft door or at the oversized baggage belt.

Best transport options for families

Pre-booked transfer is the most practical choice for families. Fixed price, child seats arranged, vehicle size matched to your group, and a driver who is waiting for you. No juggling kids while searching for a taxi.

SkyBus works for families with older children (7+) who can sit independently. The bus has luggage racks but limited space during busy periods. Strollers need to be folded. It is the cheapest option but the least convenient with small kids.

Taxi works if your children are over 7 or if you bring your own portable car seat. The rank is right outside arrivals, so the wait is minimal.

Rental car makes sense if you plan to drive around New Zealand. The rental desks are in the terminal. Allow extra time to install car seats and get settled.

Feeding and supplies

The arrivals area has limited food options. If your children are hungry after the flight, grab something from the vending machines or small cafe before heading to transport. There is no pharmacy or baby supply shop in the arrivals area, so bring what you need for the ride.

Timing expectations

With children, everything takes longer. Allow at least 60-90 minutes from touchdown to being in a vehicle. Biosecurity alone can take 30 minutes, and wrangling luggage and kids through the terminal adds time. If you have booked a transfer, the driver will track your flight and wait as long as needed, which removes the pressure of rushing.
