Hamad Airport to central Doha is a short trip, and costs reflect that. Here is how each option is actually priced — and which ones you can pin down before you land.
How each option is priced
Doha Metro (Red Line)
The Doha Metro is run by Qatar Rail, and the Red Line has a station inside the airport terminal. Fares depend on the class you travel in — Standard or Gold Club — and are sold from machines and counters at the station. Qatar Rail sets and publishes the fares at qr.com.qa; check there or at the station rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere, because metro fares and travel-card prices are revised from time to time. There are two classes — Standard and Gold Club — and travel cards are sold at the station alongside single tickets. Gold Club offers more space and comfort; both classes are clean and modern. Whatever the current fare, the metro is dramatically cheaper than any other option into Doha.Karwa taxi (metered)
Karwa, run by the state operator Mowasalat, is Qatar's official taxi fleet, and the cars are metered. Mowasalat does not publish a public fare table, and airport pickups are not necessarily charged the same as a street hail — so the honest advice is to use the Karwa app, which quotes the fare before you book, or to check the meter is running when you set off.Uber / Careem
Both apps work at DOH and both price dynamically, rising with demand — late-night and early-morning rides tend to cost more. The advantage over the taxi rank is that you see the price before you accept it.Pre-booked private transfer
The only option with a price agreed before you land:- Sedan to central Doha: 30-60 USD
- Luxury sedan (Mercedes, BMW): 50-90 USD
- Minivan (up to 7 passengers): 50-80 USD
- Premium SUV: 70-120 USD
Reaching each destination
| Destination | Metro | Taxi | Uber/Careem | Transfer (sedan) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| West Bay | Red Line, direct | Metered | App quote | 30-55 USD |
| Souq Waqif | Red Line, direct | Metered | App quote | 30-50 USD |
| The Pearl | Red Line + short taxi | Metered | App quote | 40-65 USD |
| Lusail | Red Line + short taxi | Metered | App quote | 50-80 USD |
| Al Wakra | Not direct | Metered | App quote | 25-45 USD |
Only the transfer column can be quoted in advance. For the metro, check Qatar Rail's current fares at qr.com.qa; for a taxi, use the Karwa app for an up-front quote; for Uber and Careem, the app shows the price before you accept.
What affects the price
Distance is the primary factor. Doha is compact enough that most hotels are within a 15-25 km radius of the airport. Lusail, which is further north, costs more.
Traffic has a modest impact. Doha rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM) can slow taxi meters down and increase Uber pricing. Outside those windows, the roads are free-flowing.
Time of day affects Uber/Careem pricing slightly due to supply changes. Taxis are metered so the fare is consistent. Transfers have fixed pricing.
Vehicle class creates the biggest price difference for transfers. A standard sedan versus a luxury vehicle serves the same route at very different price points — the gap is the car, not the journey.
The value perspective
The metro is extraordinary value — a fraction of what any car into town costs. The trade-off is convenience: it does not go to your hotel door, it does not run around the clock, and managing luggage on the train requires effort.
For solo travelers during metro hours, the metro is the obvious choice. For couples, a metered taxi is affordable and convenient over these short distances. For families, a transfer at 30-60 USD provides appropriate space, child seats, and door-to-door service.
Currency and payment
Qatari riyals (QAR) are needed for cash transactions. ATMs in the terminal are plentiful. Taxis accept cards. Uber/Careem process payment electronically. Transfers are typically prepaid.
The QAR is pegged to the US dollar, so conversion is predictable and does not drift the way a floating currency would.
