Raleigh-Durham Airport to the Triangle: what you actually need to know

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) serves the Research Triangle region of North Carolina — Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The airport is roughly equidistant from downtown Raleigh (15 miles southeast) and downtown Durham (12 miles northwest). There is no rail connection, so everything here is a road journey. For domestic arrivals, you walk off the plane and head to baggage claim on the lower level. There is no immigration process. For international flights (Terminal 2), immigration and customs are on the arrivals level. RDU handles relatively few international flights, so the process is usually quick.

Baggage claim areas are well-signed. The airport is mid-sized, clean, and not particularly crowded. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. After collecting bags, you exit to the ground transportation level.

Uber/Lyft is how most people leave RDU. Pickup is from designated rideshare zones on the ground level of each terminal. Request a ride on the app, walk to the zone, and wait 3-8 minutes. Expect noticeably more during the morning business rush, after a cluster of evening arrivals, on Friday afternoons and on holiday weekends.

RDU states that meter rates apply for trips within Durham, Orange and Wake counties, that fares beyond that service area may be metered or negotiated with the driver, and that a fuel surcharge is added to each trip. Taxis accept credit cards, and tips of 15-20% are customary. The advantage over rideshare is that a taxi is there immediately — no waiting for a car to arrive.

Pre-booked transfers offer a driver meeting you at baggage claim with a name sign, at a price fixed when you book — so you know the figure before you fly. Useful for business travellers, groups, or those who prefer a confirmed arrangement. Vehicles are typically nicer than rideshare and the driver handles luggage.

GoTriangle buses serve RDU, connecting it to the Regional Transit Center in Research Triangle Park and on to Raleigh and Durham. The full fare is USD 2.50 (GoTriangle published fare, full fare $2.50), and GoTriangle applies a daily fare cap, so a day of connecting trips costs less than the individual fares suggest. Which route serves the airport depends on the day and time — GoTriangle has run both a Route 100 and a dedicated RDU route, with different hours — so check the current timetable on gotriangle.org rather than assuming. This is the budget option, but it requires transfers and patience, and it is not practical with much luggage.

Rental cars are available from the consolidated rental car facility, connected to terminals by shuttle bus. The Triangle region is car-dependent, so if you are staying more than a few days and need to move around, a rental makes sense.

The GoTriangle bus does not run late at night. Pre-booked transfers operate at any hour. The drive to Raleigh or Durham at midnight takes about 15-20 minutes with empty roads.

Standard rideshare vehicles (UberX, Lyft) fit 2-3 passengers with luggage. If your family has four people and multiple suitcases, request an XL vehicle. Taxis at RDU are mostly sedans with decent trunk space. For families with car seats, bringing your own is the most reliable approach — neither taxis nor standard rideshare drivers carry child seats. Pre-booked transfer companies can arrange car seats on request. The airport itself is easy to navigate with strollers and bags.

Rideshare pickup zones are on the ground level of each terminal, clearly marked with signs and painted lanes. Follow the signs for "Ride App Pickup" after collecting your bags.
