Arriving late at night at Raleigh-Durham Airport

Last updated: April 2026

RDU handles domestic flights arriving until around midnight. Most evenings, the last wave of arrivals comes in between 10 and 11:30 PM. Late arrivals here are routine, and getting to your hotel is straightforward.

Transport options after dark

Uber/Lyft operate 24 hours and are available for late-night pickups at RDU. Wait times may be slightly longer than during the day — expect 5-12 minutes versus the usual 3-8 minutes. Surge pricing is uncommon late at night (demand is low even though supply is also lower). A ride to downtown Raleigh at 11 PM typically costs about the same as a midday ride, around USD 20-28.

Taxis are available at the curb outside baggage claim, though the queue is thinner after 10 PM. There are usually a few taxis waiting for the last flights. If the rank is empty, the taxi dispatcher can call one, but you may wait 10-15 minutes. Metered rates are the same as during the day.

Pre-booked transfers are the most reliable option for late arrivals. Your driver is there when you land, regardless of the hour. No waiting, no uncertainty about availability. The fixed price does not change for nighttime pickups.

GoTriangle bus does not operate late at night. The last Route 100 bus departs well before the last flights arrive.

The airport after hours

After the last flights land, the terminal empties quickly. Baggage claim areas stay accessible until luggage from the final flights is collected. Most airport shops and restaurants close by 9-10 PM. The terminal is safe and lit, but there is not much to do if you have a wait. If you need food, vending machines are available.

The drive at night

I-40 and the surrounding roads are largely empty after 10 PM. The drive to downtown Raleigh takes about 15-18 minutes versus 25-30 during rush hour. Durham is about 15 minutes. Chapel Hill is about 25 minutes. Traffic is simply not a factor late at night.

The roads are well-lit and well-maintained. The Raleigh-Durham area is safe, and driving late at night poses no particular concerns.

Practical tips

If you know your flight arrives after 10 PM, rideshare is usually fine — RDU is a big enough market that Uber and Lyft maintain late-night availability. If you want certainty, book a transfer. Have your hotel address ready on your phone. Confirm with your hotel that late check-in is available, especially for smaller hotels or bed-and-breakfasts that may not have 24-hour reception.

Late-night arrivals at RDU are uneventful. The airport is quiet, the roads are clear, and you will be at your destination in 15-30 minutes.
