Abu Dhabi Airport is 35 km from downtown. Transport costs are moderate by Gulf standards — not as cheap as Southeast Asia, but not as painful as London or Tokyo.
Taxi — the standard option
Official Abu Dhabi taxis use meters. The fare structure is:
- Flag fall (airport taxi): 20 AED, day or night — this is the airport rate, not a surcharge added on top
- Flag fall (city Silver Taxi, for comparison): 5 AED by day, 5.50 AED at night
- Per km: 1.82 AED
- Waiting time: 0.50 AED per minute
- Booking fee (only if you book rather than take the rank): 4 AED day, 5 AED between 10 PM and 6 AM
For a trip to downtown (Corniche area), 35 km: the meter alone comes to about 84 AED (20 + 1.82 × 35), so expect roughly 85-100 AED (about €20-24) once waiting time in traffic is counted. The tariff is revised periodically — check the current one before you travel.
The total depends on traffic and your exact destination. The meter is transparent — you can watch it tick. Tips aren't expected but rounding up is appreciated.
Uber & Careem
Both apps show you the fare upfront before you confirm. Typical prices to downtown:
- UberX: quoted in the app before you confirm
- Uber Black: quoted in the app, premium vehicles
- Careem Go: quoted in the app, often the best app-based availability
Prices fluctuate with demand. Late night and early morning are usually cheaper. Friday evening and event days (F1, concerts at Yas) can see surge pricing.
Bus — the budget option
The A1 bus connects the airport to the central bus station downtown.
- Fare: about 4 AED (~€1) — the tariff is 2 AED to board plus 5 fils per km; free for under-10s
- Journey time: 45-60 minutes
- Frequency: Every 30-40 minutes
- Payment: Hafilat card (buy at the airport) or contactless bank card
It's air-conditioned and comfortable, but slow with multiple stops. Not practical with heavy luggage.

Going to Yas Island instead?
If your hotel is on Yas Island (close to the airport), costs drop significantly:
- Taxi: about 40-50 AED (€9-12) on the meter
- Transfer: quoted at booking
- It's only 10 km away
Going to Dubai?
Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai is about 140 km. Options:
- Taxi: metered — the 140 km alone puts it near 275 AED before tolls and waiting time, and cross-emirate runs can carry extra charges. Expensive either way.
- Transfer: quoted at booking — the fixed price is the real argument on a trip this long
- Bus: intercity coach from Abu Dhabi bus station (take the A1 there first). Cheapest by a wide margin; check the current fare with Abu Dhabi Mobility.
- Shared intercity transport: available, priced per person; confirm before boarding
