The full fare on GoTriangle is USD 2.50 (GoTriangle published fare, full fare $2.50). A daily fare cap applies across GoTriangle and GoRaleigh, so a day of connecting rides costs less than the sum of the legs.
Buses connect RDU to the Regional Transit Center in Research Triangle Park, and from there connecting services reach Raleigh and Durham. Total journey time is 60-90 minutes including waits. Which route serves the airport depends on the day and time — GoTriangle has operated both a Route 100 and a dedicated RDU route, with different hours — so check the current timetable on gotriangle.org. Buses do not run late at night, and the bus is not practical with much luggage.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
Normally the cheapest car option from RDU, and what most travellers use. Pickup is from marked zones on the ground level of each terminal, with typical waits of 3-8 minutes.
The app quotes your fare before you confirm. That quote is your price. It moves with demand, so expect more on weekday evenings when several flights land together, on Friday afternoons, and over holiday weekends. An XL vehicle for four people with luggage costs more than the standard class.
Taxi
Metered, from the curb outside baggage claim at both terminals. There are no flat-rate zones.
What RDU does state: meter rates are charged for trips within Durham, Orange and Wake counties; fares outside that service area may be charged at the meter rate or negotiated between customer and driver; and a fuel surcharge is added to each trip. What RDU does not publish is a current meter rate — the rate schedule on its website dates from 2008 and is long out of date. So ask the driver or dispatcher for the rate before you set off. Add 15-20% for the tip. Taxis accept credit cards.
Pre-booked transfer
A sedan transfer with meet-and-greet at baggage claim. The price is fixed at booking and includes a set waiting period, so you know the figure before you fly. Minivans for larger groups cost more, and are quoted at booking. This is the only option that can include child car seats.

What affects the price
Destination is the primary factor. RDU is centrally located in the Triangle, so the three main cities are all a moderate distance away. Chapel Hill is the farthest and dearest.
Traffic affects metered taxis and rideshare alike. I-40 between RDU and Raleigh congests during rush hour, which runs the meter up and can push rideshare pricing higher at the same time.
Time of day matters most for rideshare. Late-night and early-morning rides are usually at base rates; evening peak is the worst.
