How Much Does It Cost to Get from Penang Airport to George Town?

Last updated: April 2026

Getting from Penang International Airport to George Town is affordable by any standard. Here is what each option costs in 2026.

Grab fares

The Grab app shows your fare upfront before you confirm — that quote is the only number worth planning around, because Grab pricing is dynamic and no operator publishes a rate card. Prices stay relatively stable in Penang: surge happens during heavy rain or peak hours but rarely doubles the base fare. Payment can be cashless through the app if you link a card.

Coupon taxi fares

The airport's coupon taxi system charges fixed rates by zone, and Penang Island is split into several zones. You buy the coupon at the counter inside the arrivals hall and pay in cash (Ringgit). The fare is printed on your coupon — no negotiation, no meter.

Malaysia Airports does not publish the zone table online, and the figures circulating on travel sites disagree with each other, so we are not going to quote one. Read the rates posted at the counter before you pay. A 50 percent surcharge is commonly applied for pickups in the small hours — confirm that at the counter too.

Coupon taxis generally cost more than Grab for the same trip. The convenience is that you need no app, no data connection, and no waiting for a matched driver.

Public bus

Rapid Penang charges by distance, not a flat fare: RM1.40 for the first 7 km, RM2.00 up to 14 km, RM2.70 up to 21 km, and RM5.00 at most for the longest routes (Rapid Penang fare table). The airport-to-George Town run is about 16 km, so it falls in the RM2.70 band. Pay on board with exact change — the farebox gives none — or tap a stored-value card. This is the cheapest option by far. The trade-off is time — 60 to 90 minutes — and limited luggage space. Buses run every 20-30 minutes until around 11 PM.

Pre-booked private transfers

Private transfers from PEN to George Town run RM80 to RM150 for a sedan. Minivans and larger vehicles cost RM120 to RM200. The price is fixed and includes meet-and-greet at arrivals. Compared to European or American airports, this is remarkably affordable for door-to-door service.

Fares to other destinations

Batu Ferringhi (beach area): RM130-200 by private transfer. About 30 km from the airport. Grab quotes in the app; the coupon taxi fare is a posted zone rate at the counter.

Butterworth (mainland): crossing the Penang Bridge means paying the bridge toll on top of the fare. Check the Grab quote for the day.

Bayan Lepas (near airport): the airport is already in Bayan Lepas, so nearby hotels are the cheapest zone to reach — by bus this is the RM1.40 first-7 km band.

What affects the price

Traffic: The road from Bayan Lepas to George Town via the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway gets congested during rush hours (7:30-9:30 AM, 5-7:30 PM). This can add 15-30 minutes to the trip. It does not change your fare: Grab quotes upfront, transfers are fixed at booking, and airport taxis run on a coupon rather than a meter.

Rain: Heavy tropical rain slows traffic and increases Grab demand, so the app quote rises during downpours. Check it before you confirm.

Time of day: Late-night Grab availability is lower. Coupon taxis commonly apply a surcharge for pickups in the small hours — confirm at the counter.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. You are not expected to tip taxi drivers, Grab drivers, or transfer drivers. Rounding up a small fare is a kind gesture but entirely optional.

Bottom line

Budget RM2.70 for the bus, whatever the Grab app quotes you, the posted zone rate for a coupon taxi, or RM80-150 for a private transfer. Penang airport transport is inexpensive no matter which option you choose — the question is convenience, not cost.
