KLIA is 55 km south of KL city center — it's not close. Note: There are two terminals — KLIA (full-service airlines) and KLIA2 (budget airlines like AirAsia). Both have the same transport options.

KLIA is a large, modern airport. After immigration and baggage claim, you'll enter the arrivals hall. The KLIA Ekspres train station is well-signposted and connected to both terminals. Taxi counters are in the arrivals hall — you prepay at the counter, then go to the taxi stand.

If you land at KLIA2 (AirAsia terminal), it's the same drill but a different building. The two terminals are connected by a free shuttle bus (takes about 10 minutes) and the KLIA Transit train.

WiFi is free throughout the airport, so you can book a Grab ride from arrivals. The heat and humidity hit you the moment you step outside — don't underestimate how draining a long taxi queue in 35°C weather can be.

KLIA Ekspres (train): The star option. Non-stop from KLIA to KL Sentral station in 28 minutes. KLIA Ekspres publishes the fare as RM55 for an adult single and RM100 return, with 10% off when you buy through their app or website. Trains run every 15-20 minutes from about 5 AM to 1 AM. Clean, air-conditioned, reliable. The downside: KL Sentral isn't your hotel. You'll need a taxi, Grab, or metro from there — add 15-30 minutes and a second fare.

KLIA Transit (train): Same tracks but stops at intermediate stations — Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, and Bandar Tasik Selatan. KLIA Ekspres publishes the same RM55 adult fare, and the run from KLIA T2 to KL Sentral takes 39 minutes. Only useful if your destination is near one of the intermediate stops.

Airport taxi (coupon): Buy a coupon at the taxi counter in arrivals — the price is fixed there before you get in, and it includes tolls, so traffic costs you nothing extra. Budget, premier and family-vehicle tiers are priced differently; the counter will quote you. Trip takes 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. Rush hour (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM) can push this to 90+ minutes.

Grab: Malaysia's dominant ride-hailing app. Usually cheaper than the taxi coupon during normal hours, but the price is set in the app and surges during peak times and rain — check the quote. Pick-up is from a designated area; follow signs for ride-hailing.

Airport bus: Several coach companies run to KL Sentral and other hubs. Much the cheapest option, but takes 60-90 minutes and drops you at a bus station, not your hotel. Fares are set by the operators — check at their counters. Budget option only.

Pre-booked transfer: A price fixed when you book, with the driver meeting you in arrivals with a name sign. Best for families, groups, or if you value certainty after a long flight.

KLIA handles flights 24/7, so late arrivals are normal. The KLIA Ekspres runs until about 1 AM — if you land before midnight, you can still catch it. After that, your options are airport taxis (available 24/7 from the coupon counter), Grab (fewer drivers but still operational), or a pre-booked transfer. The upside of arriving late: zero traffic. A midnight taxi to KL center takes about 45 minutes flat.

The KLIA Ekspres handles luggage well — there's dedicated space on the trains. But remember: you still need to get from KL Sentral to your hotel with all that luggage.

For families with kids: the KLIA Ekspres is comfortable and fast, but transfers are the lowest-hassle option. Request a child seat when booking. Malaysian taxis don't carry child seats, and enforcement of child seat laws is inconsistent.

If you have more than 2 large suitcases, mention this when booking a transfer — a standard sedan may not fit everything.

KLIA Ekspres: Follow the clear signage from arrivals to the train station. It's a 5-minute walk via covered walkway.
