How Much Does It Cost to Get from SXM Airport to Your Hotel

St. Maarten is a small island, and distances from the airport to any destination are short. Transport costs reflect this — nothing is very far, but there are no ultra-cheap options like a metro or public bus.

Government-set taxi rates

Taxis at Princess Juliana Airport use rates set by the government based on destination zones, not a meter. As a rule of thumb, Dutch-side destinations close to the airport (Maho, Simpson Bay, Philipsburg) cost less than French-side destinations further away (Marigot, Grand Case, Orient Bay), and a shared taxi costs less per person than a private one. We could not independently verify a current published rate card for specific destinations — the official rates are posted at the taxi stand outside arrivals, and you should confirm the fare with the dispatcher or driver before you get in.

Nighttime surcharges are common after approximately 22:00. Confirm whether the surcharge applies and what it adds before departure.

Pre-booked transfer prices

Private transfer prices depend on destination and vehicle type. Check the quoted price when you book. What you get over a taxi is a guaranteed vehicle, no waiting, and a driver who knows your specific address.

Rental car costs

Rental car pricing varies by agency, vehicle class, and season — check current rates directly with rental agencies at the airport. Fuel is reasonably priced. Parking at most resorts and restaurants is free.

For stays of a week or more, a rental car is often the most economical transport option overall, especially if you plan to move around the island. Repeated taxi fares for airport transfers plus beach and dinner trips during the week can add up quickly, so it is worth comparing the weekly rental rate against your expected taxi usage.

No ride-hailing

Uber and Lyft do not operate in St. Maarten. There is no app-based alternative to taxis and transfers. This means you cannot compare surge pricing or shop for the cheapest ride. The government-set rates are what they are — ask the dispatcher for the fare before you get in.

Cost comparison for a typical stay

For a family staying at a Dutch side resort for a week: two airport taxi trips (arrival and departure) plus several beach and dinner trips by taxi during the stay can add up. A pre-booked transfer removes the arrival-day uncertainty but is priced separately. Compare your expected taxi/transfer trips against a week's rental car rate to see which works out cheaper for your itinerary.

For travelers who plan to stay at their resort and take one or two excursions, taxis are often cheaper overall. For active travelers who want to visit multiple beaches, eat at restaurants across the island, and explore both sides, a rental car is more likely to pay for itself.

Currency note

The Dutch side officially uses the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG), and the French side uses the euro. In practice, US dollars are accepted everywhere on both sides of the island. Most taxi drivers prefer USD cash. ATMs on the Dutch side dispense both USD and ANG.
