Perth Airport Transfers: What You Actually Need to Know

Perth Airport (PER) is located about 12 km east of the Perth CBD. Getting into the city takes 20 to 35 minutes depending on traffic. The most common options are pre-booked private transfers, rideshare (Uber), taxis, and the Forrestfield-Airport Link train. The train is the newest addition — it opened relatively recently and connects the airport directly to the city. For tired travelers, a pre-booked transfer is the most comfortable route. For budget travelers, the train is hard to beat.

Perth Airport has four terminals. Terminals 1 and 2 handle international and some domestic flights (Qantas international, Virgin Australia). Terminals 3 and 4 serve domestic routes. The terminals are not connected by walkways — if you need to transfer between T1/T2 and T3/T4, you need the free inter-terminal bus or a short drive.

For international arrivals at T1, immigration and customs are thorough. Australia has strict biosecurity controls — expect your bags to be screened or inspected, and allow 30 to 60 minutes from landing to exiting the terminal. Declare everything you are unsure about; the fines for undeclared items are serious.

Once through, the arrivals hall has ATMs, a currency exchange, and SIM card options. Ground transport is well-signed from there.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you at your terminal's arrivals area with a name sign. Prices are fixed, the vehicle is known in advance, and you go directly to your destination. This is the simplest option, especially after a long international flight when you may be exhausted.

Forrestfield-Airport Link (train): The Airport Line connects T1/T2 (Airport Central station) and T3/T4 (Redcliffe station) to the Perth CBD via Elizabeth Quay station. The ride takes about 18 minutes to the city center. Since 1 January 2026 Transperth has charged one flat "Go Anywhere" fare to travel anywhere on the network, the Airport Line included: $2.80 with a SmartRider on Autoload, $3.15 with a contactless card, or $3.50 cash (Transperth, effective 1 January 2026). Fares are revised periodically, so check Transperth before you travel. Trains run every 10-12 minutes during peak hours and every 15-20 minutes off-peak.

Uber/Rideshare: Uber operates at all Perth Airport terminals. Pickup is from designated rideshare areas in the parking areas. The app quotes your fare before you confirm, and it moves with demand, so check it on the day rather than budgeting from a published figure. Perth Airport adds a $4.50 airport fee to every rideshare pick-up. Wait times are usually 5-10 minutes during the day but can increase late at night.

Taxis: Available at taxi ranks outside each terminal. Perth taxi fares are capped by regulation and run on the meter: $5.40 to start plus $2.13 per kilometre on the weekday daytime tariff, or $7.70 to start plus the same $2.13 per kilometre at night, at weekends and on public holidays, with waiting time charged at $61 an hour (Transport WA, Schedule 4 of the Transport (Road Passenger Services) Regulations 2020). Perth Airport adds a $4.50 taxi fee on top. Over the 12 km to the CBD that puts the fare around $35-40 before time lost in traffic. Maximum fares are reviewed every year against CPI, so check the current schedule before you travel.

Public bus: The 380 bus connects the airport to the city, though it is slower and less convenient than the train for most travelers. The train has largely replaced this as the go-to public transit option.

Rental cars: All major rental agencies operate from the airport with offices accessible via shuttle or walkway depending on your terminal.

The train is the one fixed, published price into the city: a flat $2.80 with a SmartRider on Autoload, $3.15 contactless or $3.50 cash, anywhere on the network (Transperth, effective 1 January 2026).

A taxi runs on the regulated meter — $5.40 to start plus $2.13 per kilometre by day, $7.70 to start at night and at weekends, plus Perth Airport's $4.50 taxi fee — which works out around $35-40 over the 12 km to the CBD before traffic. Rideshare is quoted in the app and moves with demand, and carries the same $4.50 airport fee. A private transfer for a sedan is AUD $70-$120, fixed at booking.

Destinations further out cost more: Fremantle is about 35 km, roughly three times the distance to the CBD, and the meter reflects that. Scarborough, Cottesloe, and other beach suburbs fall between the CBD and Fremantle.

Australia is an expensive country for transport. Perth is no exception. The train offers genuine savings, especially for solo travelers.

International flights from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other hubs frequently arrive in Perth late at night or in the early hours. The Forrestfield-Airport Link train runs until approximately midnight on most nights, with the last train varying by day. Check the Transperth website for current schedules.

After the last train, your options are rideshare, taxi, or a pre-booked transfer. Uber availability drops after midnight — wait times of 15-25 minutes are common, and surge pricing applies. Taxis remain available at the rank but supply can thin out during the early hours.

Pre-booked transfers are the most reliable late-night option. Your driver tracks your flight and is there when you clear customs — no waiting, no surge pricing. Given that many international arrivals at Perth land between 10 PM and 2 AM, this is a popular choice.

Australian law requires child restraints for children under 7 in all vehicles. Taxis have an exemption for children over 1 year in some states, but the rules are strict in Western Australia. Rideshare vehicles do not carry child seats. If you need one, either bring your own or request one when booking a private transfer.

The airport train handles luggage but can be crowded during peak hours. With a stroller, multiple suitcases, and tired children, the walk from baggage claim to the train platform and then from the city station to your hotel is a lot to manage.

A private transfer with the right vehicle and a requested child seat is the practical family choice.

For pre-booked transfers, drivers wait at the arrivals hall exit of your specific terminal with a name sign. Since Perth has multiple terminals that are not connected, confirm which terminal your flight arrives at and communicate this to your transfer provider.

For rideshare, each terminal has a designated pickup zone in the adjacent parking area. Follow the signs from arrivals — the walk takes 3-5 minutes.

Taxis queue at the ranks directly outside each terminal's arrivals level. The airport train stations are connected to T1/T2 and T3/T4 via walkways.

Book a private transfer if: you are arriving on a long international flight, traveling with family, need a child seat, have heavy luggage, or are arriving late at night and want zero friction.

Take the train if: you are traveling light, arriving during operating hours, and staying near the CBD or a station on the Airport Line.

Use rideshare if: you want convenience at a moderate price, do not need a child seat, and are arriving when demand is reasonable.

Take a taxi if: you want a regulated metered fare, prefer not to use an app, and do not mind paying the airport surcharge.
