Nicaragua is one of Central America's most affordable countries, but airport transfer prices are set for arriving travellers and are not as cheap as you might expect. They are also not published anywhere official, which shapes what an honest guide can tell you.
Distance and travel time
Augusto C. Sandino Airport is 11 km east of central Managua. The drive takes 20-30 minutes in normal traffic. Managua does not have severe traffic congestion compared to other Central American capitals, but the roads can be confusing because the city lacks conventional street addresses. Locals navigate by landmarks.
Cost to Managua
A caveat that shapes this whole page: Nicaragua does not publish an airport taxi tariff, and neither the airport authority nor the taxi cooperative posts a fare table online. So rather than invent numbers, here is how each option is priced and where to get the real figure.
Official airport taxi: a fixed fare by destination zone, paid at the cooperative desk inside arrivals rather than to the driver. Because it is settled at the desk, you know the price before you get in — just ask there, since there is no published tariff to check against beforehand.
Pre-booked private transfer: a fixed price agreed when you book, with the driver waiting at arrivals. An SUV or minivan costs more than a sedan and is the better choice for groups or heavy luggage; price both when you book.
Hotel pickup: sometimes free, sometimes charged, sometimes bundled into the room rate. It varies by property, so ask yours directly.
There is no public bus from the airport, so the cheapest official option is the airport taxi.
Cost to other destinations
Many travellers fly into Managua but head straight to other cities or beaches. These are long-distance private hires rather than zone-priced city runs, so get a quote for the specific route, date and vehicle. The drive times are what drive the price:
- Masaya: 30-40 min drive
- Granada: 50-60 min drive
- Leon: 90 min drive
- Ometepe ferry terminal (San Jorge/Rivas): 2 hr drive
- Esteli: 2-2.5 hr drive
- San Juan del Sur: 2.5-3 hr drive
Shared shuttles run by tour companies cost meaningfully less per person than a private vehicle, but they operate on fixed schedules that may not align with your flight.
Currency and payment
US dollars are accepted everywhere in Nicaragua, including for airport taxis and transfers. The official airport taxi desk accepts cash only -- no cards. Private transfer companies often accept card payment at the time of online booking. ATMs at the airport dispense Nicaraguan cordobas.
One genuinely useful thing about Nicaragua: the exchange rate is not a moving target. The Central Bank sets the official rate rather than letting it float, and for all of 2026 it is 36.6243 cordobas per dollar, with the crawl rate held at zero percent. So the conversion you work out before you fly is the one you will get.
Are these prices fair
Airport fares are set for international arrivals and are a multiple of what a local taxi within Managua costs for an ordinary trip — that gap is real, and it is the same story at most airports in the region. What you are buying is a vetted driver, a fixed price agreed before you move, and a direct ride at an hour when the alternatives are thin. Given there is no bus and no rail, it is a reasonable trade rather than a rip-off. Judge it against the quote you actually get, not against a range printed here.
Saving money
If you are on a tight budget, some hostels in Managua organise shared airport pickups — contact your accommodation in advance, since the price and whether it is offered at all vary by property. For onward travel to Granada or Leon, taking a taxi to the bus terminal and then a local bus is dramatically cheaper than a private car, but it adds complexity and time, and it is hard work with luggage. Shared shuttle services from the airport to popular tourist destinations are the middle ground.
