Late Night Arrivals at Montego Bay Airport

Several flights from the US and Canada arrive at Sangster International Airport in the evening, with some touching down after 9 or 10 PM. Here is what to expect and how to handle it.

The Airport at Night

MBJ stays open and staffed for all scheduled arrivals. Immigration and customs operate normally. The queues are often shorter for late flights, which is a pleasant change from the afternoon crush. Most shops and food outlets in the terminal close by late evening, but basic services remain available.

The arrivals hall thins out after the last wave of flights. Transfer reps and authorised taxi drivers will be there for late arrivals, though in smaller numbers than during the day.

Transport Options After Dark

Pre-booked private transfer: This is the recommended option for any late arrival, and it becomes essential if you are heading beyond Montego Bay. Your driver tracks your flight and waits regardless of delays. The price is the same as a daytime transfer.

Resort transfer: If your resort includes airport pickup, they will accommodate late arrivals. Confirm your flight details with the resort so they schedule the driver accordingly.

Authorised airport taxi (JUTA or JCAL): Available for late flights but with fewer drivers. For a short ride to a Montego Bay hotel this works fine — the rates are posted at the Authorised Airport Taxi desk outside the Customs exit and are the same whatever the hour. For longer routes, availability drops.

Shared shuttle: Most shared shuttle services do not operate for very late arrivals. If your flight lands after 9 PM and you were counting on a shuttle to Negril, you may find it is not running. Check schedules before relying on this.

Unofficial taxis: Even less advisable at night than during the day. Only JUTA and JCAL are authorised at the airport, and they operate from the marked desk. Do not use anyone who approaches you elsewhere.

Night Driving in Jamaica

The drive from MBJ to Montego Bay hotels at night is short and straightforward — well-lit roads, minimal traffic, 10–15 minutes.

Longer drives are different. The road to Negril (A1) is a two-lane highway that passes through small towns. Lighting is inconsistent outside built-up areas. Pedestrians, cyclists, and animals on the road are common hazards after dark. The road to Ocho Rios (A1 east) has similar conditions with some hilly sections.

None of this is dangerous with a professional local driver who knows the road. But it is why driving yourself at night on your first visit to Jamaica is not recommended.

Security Considerations

Jamaica requires standard travel precautions. The airport itself and the transfer route to Montego Bay hotels are safe. For longer transfers, stick with licensed, reputable companies. Your driver will handle the route safely — this is their daily routine.

Once at your resort, late arrivals are routine. Most hotels and resorts have 24-hour reception and will have your room ready regardless of check-in time, though confirm this when booking.
