When taxis win
Taxis have one major advantage in Las Vegas: they cannot surge. Airport-to-Strip trips are not metered — the Nevada Taxicab Authority sets flat zone fares, three zones running up the Strip, and has done since 1 January 2020. When rideshare surges on a busy Saturday night, the taxi fare is unchanged. Taxis also pick up curbside, which is faster and easier than walking to the parking garage.
The zones were introduced expressly to end long-hauling, so the old tunnel detour (via I-215) no longer inflates an airport-to-Strip fare — the zone fare applies whatever route the driver takes. It still matters going somewhere off the Strip, where the meter runs. The Authority revises the zone amounts periodically and has run temporary event surcharges, so check taxi.nv.gov for the current figures.
When rideshare wins
During off-peak hours (weekday mornings, early afternoons), rideshare is often the cheapest option. You see the price before booking, there is no tipping pressure (though it is appreciated), and you can track your driver. Both Uber and Lyft operate at LAS. Compare both apps — and the taxi zone fare — before booking.
When a pre-booked transfer wins
During major conventions (CES, SEMA, CinemaCon), fight weekends, or any large event, rideshare prices skyrocket and taxi lines grow long. A pre-booked transfer is fixed when you book, and you get a driver waiting at baggage claim, which beats walking to the parking garage. Price it against the taxi zone fare, which is the other thing in town that will not move on you that night.
For groups of 4-6, one pre-booked SUV or minivan works out cheaper per head than individual rideshares during peak times and is far more comfortable than squeezing into a sedan.
The Vegas-specific factor
Las Vegas is an event city. What matters is not just the distance (which is short) but what is happening that day. A Tuesday morning ride is a completely different experience from a Saturday night after a UFC fight. Check the Vegas event calendar before deciding your transport strategy.
