Kansai International Airport is about 50 km from central Osaka, built on an artificial island in the bay. The distance means transport costs more than at many Asian airports, but Japan's rail options keep things reasonable — and one discount ticket makes a real difference if you know to ask for it.

Children travel at half price on the HARUKA One-way Ticket (JPY 650 / JPY 900 / JPY 1,100) and on the Namba bus (JPY 700). The Rapi:t limited express charge for children is JPY 350 for a regular seat and JPY 560 for a Super Seat.
The discount ticket most visitors miss
JR West sells the HARUKA One-way Ticket only to foreign visitors holding temporary visitor status — which is to say, almost everyone reading this page. It is materially cheaper than the standard Haruka fare, and you have to ask for it by name at the JR ticket office in the airport with your passport. If you simply queue up and buy a normal ticket to Tennoji, you will pay more than you needed to. This is the single easiest saving at KIX.
If you have a Japan Rail Pass, the Haruka is fully covered at no additional cost, and the discount ticket is irrelevant to you.
About those tolls
A point worth being precise about, because it is widely got wrong: in Japan, expressway and bridge tolls are not included in the taxi meter. They are added to your fare at the end. The airport's own metered estimate for central Osaka lists roughly JPY 19,700–23,200 on the meter plus about JPY 2,260 in tolls. The reservation-only fixed-fare taxis work the same way — MK's published rate of "from JPY 16,400" to Umeda is explicitly before tolls.
A 20% surcharge applies between 22:00 and 05:00 on both metered and fixed-fare taxis.
Tips for saving money
The cheapest way into Osaka by rail is the Nankai Airport Express — an ordinary ticket, no limited express surcharge, about 50 minutes to Namba on a normal commuter train. Paying the Rapi:t's JPY 700 surcharge buys you roughly 15 minutes and a nicer seat; decide whether that is worth it to you rather than assuming the fast train is the default.
Airport limousine buses offer good value and drop you at major hotels with your luggage stowed underneath.
For groups of 3-4, a pre-booked transfer — priced per vehicle rather than per person — can work out competitively against individual train tickets, with door-to-door service and luggage handling.
