The MRT cutoff

The MRT Red Line runs until approximately midnight. If your flight lands before 11 PM and you clear immigration quickly, you can catch the last trains. Check the current schedule at krtc.com.tw, as last-train times vary slightly.

After midnight, the MRT is not an option. Do not count on it if your arrival time is close to the cutoff.

Taxis at night

Kaohsiung taxis are available at the airport after midnight, though fewer queue up during the small hours. The night surcharge is set by the city, not the driver: fares rise 20% between 23:00 and 06:00, which the meter applies automatically. On the standard tariff — NT$85 for the first 1.25 km, then NT$5 per 200 m, plus the NT$50 international-terminal fee — that turns a roughly NT$250–330 run into central Kaohsiung into something nearer NT$300–400.

The surcharge is modest, and taxis remain the most practical late-night option for most travelers. Wait times are generally under 10 minutes even past midnight.

When to pre-book

A private transfer is priced per vehicle, fixed at booking, and carries no night tariff — so the price is the same whether you land at noon or at 02:00, and a driver is waiting when you walk out. This is worth it if:

  • Your flight arrives very late (after 1 AM)
  • You are heading to a destination outside central Kaohsiung
  • You need a child seat
  • You are not comfortable finding a taxi in an unfamiliar city at night

For destinations like Kenting (2 hours south), a late-night transfer is essentially the only practical option — the direct airport bus does not run in the small hours.

The terminal at night

KHH is quiet but safe at night. The 7-Eleven near arrivals may still be open. Seating is available. The terminal is well-lit and secure.

Practical tip

Kaohsiung is one of the safer cities in Asia. Taking a taxi at 1 AM is not a risky activity here. The drivers are professional, fares are metered on a published tariff, and the ride is short. If you are reasonably comfortable traveling, a late taxi from KHH is straightforward.
