The real difference: predictability
Taxis and Uber/Lyft are both subject to traffic, surge pricing, and availability. A taxi during off-peak is often the best value — jump in the queue, get in a cab in minutes, and the meter plus the USD 5.00 LaGuardia surcharge, the state and congestion charges and a tip lands around USD 50 into Midtown. During rush hour the queue grows, the 4–8 PM surcharge adds USD 2.50, and stopped traffic bills at the same rate as distance.
Uber and Lyft have the advantage of upfront pricing, but neither publishes a fare table and surge pricing during peak times can push a Midtown ride well above a metered cab. The pickup process also involves walking to the ride-app zone and waiting.
