Taxi vs Uber vs Pre-Booked Transfer from LaGuardia Airport

Last updated: April 2026

LaGuardia gives you more ground transport options than most airports, but the lack of a rail link means all of them involve sitting in traffic. Here is how they compare.

The real difference: predictability

Taxis and Uber/Lyft are both subject to traffic, surge pricing, and availability. A taxi during off-peak is often the best value — jump in the queue, get in a cab in minutes, and the meter plus the USD 5.00 LaGuardia surcharge, the state and congestion charges and a tip lands around USD 50 into Midtown. During rush hour the queue grows, the 4–8 PM surcharge adds USD 2.50, and stopped traffic bills at the same rate as distance.

Uber and Lyft have the advantage of upfront pricing, but neither publishes a fare table and surge pricing during peak times can push a Midtown ride well above a metered cab. The pickup process also involves walking to the ride-app zone and waiting.

A pre-booked transfer costs more in base price but offers certainty. You know the price before you fly, the driver is tracking your flight, and there is no waiting.

When each option wins

  • Taxi wins when you are travelling solo/couple, arriving off-peak, and want to leave the airport fast.
  • Uber/Lyft wins when surge pricing is low and you want upfront pricing through the app.
  • Transfer wins when you want a guaranteed price, are travelling with family or lots of luggage, or are arriving at an unusual hour.
