Getting from LaGuardia Airport to Manhattan with Kids

Last updated: April 2026

LaGuardia's rebuilt terminals are modern and easy to navigate — the challenge for families is what happens once you step outside.

The car seat situation

New York has a unique rule: children under 7 riding in taxis and ride-hails are legally exempt from car seat requirements. That said, many parents are uncomfortable putting a toddler in a yellow cab with no restraint. Your options:

  • Bring your own car seat and install it in the taxi. Drivers must allow this by law.
  • Book a transfer and request a child seat when booking. This is the easiest approach.
  • Use Uber with car seat option (UberX with Car Seat) — available but not always reliable for airport pickups.

Vehicle size for families

A standard yellow cab fits 3 passengers in the back seat. With a car seat installed, that drops to 2. If you have a family of four plus luggage, options include:

Inside the terminal

The new Terminal B and C are family-friendly with clean restrooms, nursing rooms, and decent food options. Stroller-friendly elevators and ramps are available throughout. The walk from gate to ground transport is straightforward.

Practical tips

  • Skip the Q70 bus with a stroller and bags. It is technically possible but not enjoyable.
  • Request a minivan early. Whether taxi or transfer, larger vehicles fill up fast during peak travel.
  • Bring snacks. NYC traffic is unpredictable — a 25-minute ride can become 60 minutes.
  • Pre-book if your flight lands during rush hour. The taxi line with restless kids and heavy bags is no fun.
