Las Vegas Airport to the Strip: what you actually need to know

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is remarkably close to the Las Vegas Strip, only about 5 km away. You can see the casinos from the runway. A taxi or rideshare to most Strip hotels takes 10-20 minutes. Airport-to-Strip taxi trips run on flat zone fares set by the Nevada Taxicab Authority rather than a meter, so the fare is knowable before you get in. There is no rail connection to the Strip. Rideshare apps (Uber and Lyft) are the dominant transport mode. The airport is busy, loud, and full of slot machines from the moment you step off the plane.

If you are arriving on a domestic US flight, there is no immigration. You walk off the plane and head to baggage claim. The terminal is large and walking distances can be significant, especially in Terminal 1. Slot machines line the corridors. Baggage claim areas are clearly signed.

International arrivals go through US Customs and Border Protection. Lines can be substantial, especially when multiple international flights arrive together. Allow 30-60 minutes for the process. Global Entry and ESTA pre-clearance help.

Once you have your bags, follow signs to ground transportation. In Terminal 1, rideshare pickup is on Level 2 of the parking garage. In Terminal 3, it is on Level 2M of the parking structure. This is not obvious, and the walk can be 5-10 minutes from baggage claim. Taxis queue at designated stands outside each terminal.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is how most visitors get to the Strip. Pricing is dynamic — the app quotes you before you confirm, and during peak times (Friday and Saturday evenings, after major events or conventions) surge pricing can multiply the fare. Because it moves by the minute, check it against the fixed taxi zone fare on the day. The pickup points are in the parking garages, not curbside, which can be confusing on your first visit.

The Nevada Taxicab Authority sets flat zone fares — three zones running up the Strip — and the meter only applies to destinations outside those zones. The Authority introduced the zones on 1 January 2020 specifically to end long-hauling and give riders a fare they can know before they get in. A state excise tax and an airport fee are added on top, and paying by card costs extra. The Authority publishes the current zone amounts and revises them from time to time (it has also run temporary event surcharges, such as for the Formula 1 weekend), so check taxi.nv.gov for today's figures rather than trusting a number quoted on a travel page. Because the zone fare does not depend on the route, the old tunnel long-haul (via I-215) no longer inflates an airport-to-Strip fare the way it once did — ending exactly that was the point of the zones. It still matters for destinations off the Strip, where the meter runs.

Pre-booked transfers are quoted and fixed when you book. The driver meets you at baggage claim or a designated meeting point. For groups or those wanting a guaranteed vehicle, especially during convention season when rideshare prices spike, this is worth pricing up against the taxi zone fare.

Airport shuttle buses (shared ride) have largely been replaced by rideshare, though some still operate. They charge per person and make multiple stops, so they are slow; check the operator's current fare at the desk.

RTC public bus Route 109 serves Terminal 1 and runs 24 hours. RTC charges different fares on its residential routes and on its Strip & Downtown Express services, so check the current fare and the right route for your hotel at rtcsnv.com or in the rideRTC app. It is slow with stops and not practical with heavy luggage.

Rental cars are available from a consolidated rental car center (a short shuttle ride from the terminal). Most Strip resorts now charge for self-parking, and the rates vary by property — check your hotel's current parking fee, because it adds up fast. Most visitors do not need a car for a Strip-focused trip.

Transport to the Las Vegas Strip:

The taxi zone fare is the only one of these set by a public authority, and the Authority publishes it at taxi.nv.gov. Three zones run up the Strip, so a hotel at the north end costs more than one near the airport. Destinations off the Strip — downtown, Henderson, off-Strip resorts — fall outside the zones and go back on the meter.

Tipping is expected in Las Vegas. For taxis, 15-18% is the local norm. For rideshare, tip through the app. Private transfer drivers are usually tipped too.

Las Vegas never sleeps, and neither does its airport. Flights arrive around the clock, and ground transport is available 24 hours. Taxis queue all night. Rideshare apps work at all hours, though surge pricing often hits after midnight on weekends. The Strip is fully alive at 2 AM, so getting a ride is never an issue. Pre-booked transfers are available for any arrival time.

The airport handles luggage well with free trolleys in baggage claim. For families, the walk to rideshare pickup points in the parking garages can feel long with children and bags. Taxis outside the terminal are more convenient for families. A pre-booked transfer or minivan is the easiest option for families of 4 or more with luggage. Nevada law requires an approved child restraint for young children, and the thresholds are set in state law rather than by the airport — check the current rule before you fly. Standard taxis and rideshares do not carry seats. Request one when booking a transfer.

For pre-booked transfers, the meeting point is usually at the baggage claim area or a designated spot near the terminal exit. The driver will have your name on a sign. For rideshare, follow the overhead signs to the rideshare pickup area in the parking garage (Level 2 in T1, Level 2M in T3). For taxis, exit the terminal and follow signs to the taxi stand.

Use Uber or Lyft if you are a solo traveller or couple arriving at a non-peak time with light luggage.

Take a taxi if you want to leave immediately without an app, especially with family or heavy bags.

Book a private transfer if you are arriving during a convention (CES, SEMA, etc.), want guaranteed pricing during peak times, or have a large group.

Book a limo or SUV if you want to start the Vegas experience at the airport. This is Vegas, after all.

Take the bus if you are on a strict budget and travelling light.
