The unpublished fares
The airport taxi counter sells flat-rate rides: you name your destination and get a fixed price and an assigned driver before you set off. The airport does not publish the rate card, so the only honest instruction is to ask at the counter (Entrance 1, main terminal, arrivals level).

Hidden costs to watch for
Tollways: There are no toll roads between the airport and central Chiang Mai.
Surge pricing: Grab rises with demand during Songkran (April) and Yi Peng (November). The taxi counter's flat fare and the buses do not surge, but taxi queues get longer.
Cash requirement: Taxis, songthaews and buses are cash. Thai ATMs charge a per-withdrawal fee for foreign cards that the banks change periodically — check the on-screen fee before confirming, and withdraw enough for your first day to avoid paying it twice.
What is actually the cheapest option?
The RTC city bus at 30 THB is the cheapest published option and runs to the Old City area. A songthaew (red shared truck) can be cheaper still for short hops, but it is not metered and has no published airport fare, so agree the price before you get in; availability at the terminal itself is inconsistent.
Is a private transfer worth it?
A private transfer costs more than the bus and more than a shared ride. The premium buys you a named driver waiting at arrivals, a guaranteed vehicle size, and no app dependency. For a solo traveller heading to the Old City, the 40 THB A1 shuttle or a counter taxi does the job. For families or late-night arrivals, having the car booked and the price fixed in advance is what you are paying for — get the quote and weigh it against the counter's fare on the day.
