Arriving Late at Night at Chiang Mai Airport

Last updated: March 2026

Chiang Mai Airport handles flights until roughly midnight, with occasional arrivals stretching past that. If your flight lands after 22:00, your transport options narrow significantly compared to daytime.

What is available after 22:00

| Option | Availability after 22:00 | After midnight | |--------|-------------------------|----------------| | Metered taxi | Reduced — some cars waiting | Very limited | | Grab | Available but fewer drivers | Sparse, surge likely | | Songthaew | Not available | Not available | | Pre-booked transfer | Guaranteed | Guaranteed | | Hotel shuttle | By arrangement only | By arrangement only |

Songthaews stop running by 21:00–22:00, so they are not an option for late arrivals. Metered taxis usually have a few cars available until the last scheduled flight, but the queue can grow long when multiple flights land close together.

Grab technically works at night, but driver availability drops sharply after 23:00. You may wait 10–20 minutes for a match, and surge pricing can push the fare up by 30–50% — turning a 150 THB ride into 200–250 THB.

Why pre-booking makes sense at night

For a late-night arrival, a pre-booked transfer is the most practical choice. Your driver tracks your flight and waits regardless of delays. The price is fixed — typically 350–500 THB (9–13 EUR) to the Old City — with no surge. That is only 3–5 EUR more than a Grab at normal rates, and potentially the same or less than a surging Grab.

The drive to the Old City takes under 10 minutes at night with empty roads, so the actual transport part is fast. The variable is how long you wait for a car.

The terminal at night

CNX stays open until the last flight clears. The arrivals hall has air conditioning, some seating, and the ATMs remain accessible. The 7-Eleven closes earlier than you might expect — do not count on it after 23:00. The currency exchange booths also close by 22:00–23:00.

Withdraw cash from an ATM before the last exchange booth closes if you plan to take a metered taxi. Alternatively, pre-book and pay online to avoid the cash issue entirely.

Safety at night

Chiang Mai is a safe city by any standard. The airport area is well-lit and monitored. Taking a metered taxi or Grab at night carries no meaningful safety concern. The main risk is simply not finding a ride quickly, not personal safety.

Practical checklist for late arrivals

  • Book a transfer in advance if your flight lands after 22:00
  • Have your hotel address in Thai saved on your phone — helpful for any driver
  • Withdraw cash inside the terminal if you have not pre-paid
  • Download Grab as a backup, but do not rely on it as your primary option after midnight
  • Confirm your hotel accepts late check-in — some guesthouses in the Old City lock their doors after 23:00
