Arriving at Chiang Mai Airport with Kids – What Families Need to Know

Last updated: March 2026

Chiang Mai Airport is one of the easier airports to navigate with children. It is small, single-terminal, and only 4 km from most hotels in the Old City. The ride takes under 20 minutes even in traffic, which helps when kids are tired.

Getting through the terminal

Free luggage trolleys are available near baggage claim. The walk from arrivals to the taxi pickup is flat — no stairs or escalators required, which makes stroller navigation straightforward.

There is a small nursing room near the restrooms in the arrivals hall. It is basic but private. The 7-Eleven inside the terminal sells water, snacks, and baby wipes. If you need formula or nappies, there is a Tops supermarket about 10 minutes away by car on the airport road.

Best transport option for families

A pre-booked private transfer is the most practical choice for families. Here is why:

  • Vehicle size is confirmed in advance. Standard taxis at CNX are sedans. If you have a stroller, car seat, and suitcases, you need a minivan — and you cannot guarantee one from the taxi queue.
  • No waiting with tired children. Your driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign.
  • Car seats can be requested. Most transfer companies in Chiang Mai offer child seats on request. Taxis never have them. Grab does not offer them.
| Family size | Recommended vehicle | Estimated price to Old City | |-------------|--------------------|--------------------------| | 2 adults + 1 child | Sedan or SUV | 350–450 THB (9–12 EUR) | | 2 adults + 2–3 children | Minivan | 500–700 THB (13–18 EUR) | | Large family or group | Minibus | 800–1,200 THB (21–31 EUR) |

Car seat situation in Chiang Mai

Thailand does not strictly enforce child car seat laws, and almost no taxi or Grab vehicle will have one. If car seats matter to you — and they should for young children — request one when booking your transfer. Bring your own travel car seat if you want certainty.

Tips for a smooth arrival

  • Withdraw cash inside the terminal. Taxis are cash only, and the ATMs inside the airport are more comfortable to use with kids than searching outside.
  • Buy water and snacks at the 7-Eleven before heading to the pickup area. The Old City is close, but Chiang Mai traffic can be unpredictable during school hours.
  • Ask your hotel about shuttle service. Many mid-range and luxury hotels in Chiang Mai offer free airport pickup. It is always worth asking when you book your room.
