Taxi vs private transfer from Barcelona Airport

Last updated: April 2026

Barcelona has a well-functioning taxi system, and the Aerobus handles much of the city-bound traffic efficiently. The comparison between taxis and pre-booked transfers is most relevant for groups, late arrivals, and anyone heading beyond the city.

Taxis at Barcelona Airport

Taxis queue at designated ranks outside T1 and T2 arrivals exits. They are regulated by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, metered, and generally reliable. Barcelona taxi drivers are familiar with all major hotels and city areas.

The tariff is published by the Institut Metropolità del Taxi and in force from 19 January 2026 to 17 January 2027: 2.80 EUR to start, plus 1.35 EUR per km on the weekday daytime tariff (T-1, 08:00-20:00) or 1.66 EUR per km at night, weekends and holidays (T-2), plus a compulsory 4.60 EUR airport supplement. The meter also charges 27.75 EUR per hour for waiting time, so traffic counts. Every trip starting at the airport has a guaranteed minimum of 21.00 EUR including all supplements, and there is a fixed 46.00 EUR rate between the airport and the Moll Adossat cruise terminal.

Over the 15 km into the centre that works out at roughly 30-40 EUR by day, more on the T-2 tariff. Tariffs are revised each January, so check the current one before you travel.

The taxi queue at BCN can be long during busy periods, particularly after major long-haul flight banks (late morning and evening). Waits of 20-30 minutes are possible at peak times. The rank is well-managed with attendants, so it moves predictably.

For destinations beyond the metropolitan area (Sitges, Tarragona), the tariff above does not apply and no published fare replaces it. Agree the price with the driver before you set off. Tolls, such as the C-32 to Sitges, are the passenger's responsibility.

Pre-booked private transfers

Driver meets you in T1 or T2 arrivals. Fixed price at booking. Flight tracking included — the driver adjusts for delays without extra charge.

Transfer prices are not set by any tariff. They depend on the distance, the vehicle and the supplier, and are quoted per booking, so you see the exact total for your route and group before you pay. For the city, that lands in broadly the same territory as a metered taxi; the difference is that it is fixed in advance and does not move with the traffic. For longer routes, where no taxi tariff applies at all, the predictability is worth more.

The Aerobus factor

For city-bound travellers, the Aerobus (7.45 EUR to Plaça Catalunya, 35 minutes) is genuinely competitive for individuals and small groups that do not need door-to-door service. Any honest comparison between taxi and transfer should acknowledge that the Aerobus is the better choice for budget-conscious city arrivals. If you land at T2, the Rodalies train at 2.90 EUR is cheaper again.

When each option wins

Taxi: Solo travellers and couples going to central Barcelona during the day. Short queue, published meter, arrives at your hotel. The Aerobus is cheaper but a taxi is a reasonable comfort upgrade, and the 21.00 EUR minimum means short hops are not the bargain they look.

Transfer: Groups of three or more, families needing child seats, late-night arrivals, and anything beyond the metropolitan taxi area — precisely where the meter stops being a check on the price.

Aerobus or Rodalies: Anyone travelling light to a central destination who does not need a door-to-door ride.
