Zadar and the surrounding Dalmatian coast are excellent for families — shallow beaches, historic towns, and national parks. The small airport makes arrival simple, but child seat availability requires planning.
At the airport
ZAD is compact. Restrooms are available but dedicated family facilities are limited. There is a small cafe for drinks and snacks. The terminal gets warm in summer, so have water for children. The upside of a small airport: you are out and on your way quickly, usually within 15-20 minutes of landing.
Child seats
Croatian law requires children under 150 cm to use appropriate child restraints. Unlike some countries, taxis are not exempt — the law applies to all vehicles. In practice, enforcement is inconsistent, but the safety rationale stands.
Taxis at Zadar Airport will not have child seats. If you need one, book a private transfer and request it at the time of booking. This is genuinely important — Zadar's taxis do not carry spare seats and you will not find one at the airport.
Bringing a travel car seat from home is the most reliable approach for families with young children.
The ride with kids
The 15-20 minute drive to Zadar is short and easy. The road is good quality. Children will not have time to get restless. For destinations beyond Zadar — Nin (20-25 min), Biograd (25-35 min), or further along the coast — the ride is still manageable but plan accordingly with snacks and entertainment for longer trips.
Luggage
Families heading to holiday apartments often travel with more bags than hotel guests. A standard taxi handles 2-3 suitcases. For a family of four with full holiday luggage plus a pushchair, request a larger vehicle. The airport bus has limited luggage space and is not ideal for families with heavy loads.
Best option for families
A pre-booked transfer with child seats is the recommended choice for families with young children. The ride is short, the price difference between a taxi and transfer is modest (about 5-10 EUR), and having the child seat sorted removes the main logistical headache.
For families with older children who do not need car seats, a taxi is perfectly fine for the short ride to Zadar center.
Family destinations near Zadar
Nin has sandy beaches (rare in Croatia) that are perfect for small children — 20-25 minutes from the airport. Zadar itself has the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun installations that kids enjoy. Krka National Park with its waterfalls is about 65-80 minutes away and can be visited as a day trip.
