Ottawa is not a city that stays up late, and its airport reflects that. If your flight lands after 22:00, here is what you need to know about getting to your hotel.
What Stops Running
OC Transpo Route 97 runs until approximately midnight on weekdays, with earlier cutoffs on weekends and holidays. After the last bus, there is no public transit from YOW. The next bus does not start until around 05:00.
What Remains Available
Taxis are usually present at YOW even after midnight, but the queue is thinner. On nights with few late arrivals, you might find only 2-3 cabs waiting. The flat rate to downtown (CAD 38-42) does not change at night. If no taxis are immediately available, the wait is typically 10-20 minutes.
Rideshare (Uber and Lyft) operates 24 hours. Availability in Ottawa after midnight is decent — it is a capital city with enough drivers. Expect mild surge pricing, with fares running CAD 30-50 to downtown.
Pre-booked private transfers are the most reliable option. The driver tracks your flight and is waiting when you arrive, no matter the time. If your flight is delayed from a 22:00 landing to 01:00, the driver adjusts. This is worth something when you are exhausted and just want to get to bed.
The Terminal at Night
YOW's terminal is small and quiet after the last flights. Most food outlets and shops close by 22:00-23:00. The terminal remains accessible for arriving passengers, and security is present. Free WiFi works around the clock. If you need to wait for a ride, there are seating areas in the arrivals hall, but do not expect much activity.
Winter Late-Night Arrivals
This deserves its own section because Ottawa's winter nights are genuinely harsh. Temperatures of -25C with wind chill are normal from December through February. If you are waiting outside for a taxi or walking to a rideshare pickup zone at midnight in January, you will feel it immediately. A transfer service that meets you inside the terminal is not a luxury in these conditions — it is common sense.
Safety
Ottawa is a safe city, and the airport area is secure and well-lit. There are no particular safety concerns about late-night arrivals beyond the usual advice: use official transport, avoid unmarked vehicles, and have your accommodation details ready. The drive to downtown is straightforward on well-maintained roads, even in winter.
