Getting from AlUla Airport with kids and family

Last updated: October 2026

Traveling with children needs some planning, especially in a destination where airport taxis are limited and the distances are long.

Why plan ahead

The Royal Commission for AlUla lists airport taxis as a limited number available on a first-come, first-served basis. If several flights land together, a family may wait for a free car, and a family with luggage may need more than one. Arranging a vehicle in advance removes that uncertainty.

Child seats

We could not confirm the current child-seat rules for taxis in Saudi Arabia from an official source, and an airport taxi may not carry a child seat. If your child needs a seat, bring your own travel seat or request one when you book a transfer, giving the child's age and weight. A seat is provided only if it is confirmed in your booking. Check the current rules with the Saudi authorities before you travel.

Vehicle size

A family with several large suitcases and a stroller may not fit in a standard taxi. For a larger group or more luggage, book a larger vehicle in advance and note the stroller and luggage at booking.

Journey length

Our route database lists AlUla Town at about 24 km from the airport (roughly 34 minutes), the Ashar Valley resort area at about 21 km (roughly 31 minutes) and the Hegra area at about 38 km (roughly 49 minutes). These are approximate estimates and depend on traffic. With a tired child, even a half-hour drive feels long, so bring water and snacks.

Car hire

The Royal Commission page lists several car rental desks at the airport. Renting with a driver may be easier than driving yourself after a flight with small children. International drivers must carry a valid licence from their country of residence, and the companies listed there require an international driving permit. If you hire a car, ask about child seats at the time of booking.

Tips for families

  • Request a child seat when booking your transfer, specifying the child's age and weight
  • Keep snacks, water and a change of clothes in your hand luggage
  • Tell your accommodation your arrival time, so the room is ready when you arrive
  • Save your accommodation address on your phone, in English and if possible Arabic
  • Note the number of suitcases, strollers and car seats when you book
  • Check entry requirements for every family member with the official Saudi government sources before you travel
