SJU - San Juan

Taxi vs. Private Transfer vs. Uber at San Juan Airport

Unlike many Caribbean airports where your options are limited, SJU gives you genuine choice. Here is how the three main options compare.

Airport Taxis

San Juan airport taxis use a flat-rate zone system — no meters. Rates are set by the tourism company and posted at the taxi stand. You know the price before you get in.

To Isla Verde: $10-15. To Condado: $15-21. To Old San Juan: $21-30. These rates cover up to 3 passengers. The fourth passenger may incur a small surcharge.

Taxis are available at supervised stands outside each terminal. During busy periods, an attendant manages the queue. The cars are standard sedans — clean and air-conditioned. Drivers know the hotel zones well.

The downside: limited vehicle selection. If you need a van for 5+ people or lots of luggage, you may need to take two taxis. Car seats are not provided.

Uber and Lyft

Both apps work smoothly in Puerto Rico. SJU has marked rideshare pickup zones in the parking structure (level 1, follow signs from arrivals). Request your ride once you have your bags and are walking to the pickup area.

Fares are typically $5-10 less than taxi flat rates for the same destinations. Condado might cost $10-18, Old San Juan $15-22. However, surge pricing during peak hours or when multiple flights land simultaneously can push prices above taxi rates.

The advantages: cheaper base pricing, you see the exact fare before confirming, the route is tracked via the app, and payment is automatic. The disadvantages: possible surge pricing, wait times of 5-15 minutes, and the same car seat limitations as taxis.

Private Transfers

A pre-booked private transfer costs $20-40 to the main hotel areas — more than Uber, roughly comparable to a taxi. The driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. No waiting, no app navigation, no walking to a parking structure.

Where private transfers genuinely excel at SJU is for specific situations: families needing car seats (request at booking), groups needing a van, travelers heading to non-standard destinations (Dorado, Fajardo, Rincon), or vacation rental guests whose address might confuse a taxi driver.

Head-to-Head Comparison

| Factor | Taxi | Uber/Lyft | Private Transfer | |--------|------|-----------|------------------| | Price to Condado | $15-21 | $10-20 | $20-30 | | Wait time | 0-5 min | 5-15 min | 0 min | | Surge pricing | No | Yes | No | | Car seats | No | No | Yes (on request) | | Van/large vehicle | No | Sometimes | Yes (on request) | | Payment | Cash or card | App | Pre-paid | | Long distance (Fajardo) | Negotiable | Possible | Reliable |

The Practical Verdict

For most travelers going to Isla Verde, Condado, or Old San Juan, Uber or Lyft offers the best value. The taxi is the no-hassle option — walk out, get in, fixed price. The private transfer is the right call when you have specific needs (car seats, large group, distant destination) or simply want everything arranged before you land.

All three are safe and functional. San Juan is a US city in terms of infrastructure — the transport system works.
