SJU - San Juan

Late Night Airport Transfers from SJU

San Juan's airport handles flights around the clock, including red-eye arrivals from the mainland US in the early morning hours. If you are arriving late, SJU is one of the better airports for it.

What Is Available at Night

Unlike many Caribbean airports, SJU maintains good transport coverage after dark. Taxis operate 24/7 at the supervised stand. Uber and Lyft drivers are active in the San Juan metro area throughout the night, though wait times may be 10-15 minutes rather than 5. Pre-booked private transfers are available at any hour.

The public bus (B40) does not run late at night or in the early morning. If that was your plan, switch to one of the other options.

Taxis at Night

The taxi stand outside arrivals is staffed as long as flights are arriving. The flat-rate zone pricing is the same regardless of the hour — $15-21 to Condado, $21-30 to Old San Juan, $10-15 to Isla Verde. No surge pricing, no negotiation.

Late at night, the taxi queue is smaller but still present. You should not have to wait more than a few minutes. The drivers are the same licensed operators as during the day.

Uber and Lyft at Night

Both apps function at night in San Juan. Fares may actually be lower than during the day due to less demand (no surge). The rideshare pickup area in the parking structure is less crowded, making the process smoother.

One consideration: if your flight arrives at 2-3 AM, the pool of available drivers is smaller. You might wait 10-15 minutes instead of the usual 5. This is rarely a significant issue, but having the taxi stand as a backup plan is wise.

Pre-Booked Transfers at Night

Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts for any delays. When you walk out at midnight or 2 AM, your name sign is there. For late arrivals, this removes all uncertainty from the equation.

Most companies serving SJU do not charge a late-night surcharge for arrivals before midnight. Very early morning arrivals (red-eyes landing at 4-5 AM) may incur a small additional fee — confirm at booking.

The Drive at Night

The routes from SJU to all the main hotel areas are on well-lit urban roads. San Juan is a city of over 300,000 people — there is always some traffic and activity, even at 2 AM. The drive to Condado takes about 15 minutes at night (no traffic), Old San Juan about 20 minutes.

The areas around the main hotels (Condado, Isla Verde, Old San Juan) are generally safe at night. As in any city, stay aware of your surroundings, keep valuables secure, and head directly to your hotel.

If You Are Continuing to Another Part of the Island

If your final destination is outside San Juan (Rincon, Ponce, Fajardo, Vieques), making that journey in the middle of the night is not recommended. Puerto Rico's rural roads are dark and winding, and fatigue makes them riskier. Stay near the airport or in San Juan for the night and continue in the morning.

Several hotels near the airport in Isla Verde cater specifically to late arrivals and early departures. Some offer airport shuttle service that runs late — check with the hotel directly.

Early Morning Departures

If you arrived late and have an early departure the next day (for a domestic connection or island hopper flight), the same transport options work in reverse. Taxis and Uber are available early morning, and a pre-booked transfer to the airport can pick you up at whatever hour you need.
