Sharjah Airport serves two main groups of travelers: those staying in Sharjah and those continuing to Dubai. The cost difference between these two journeys is significant, so it is important to plan accordingly.
Getting to Sharjah city center
Sharjah city center is just 12 km from the airport. Transport costs are modest:
- Taxi: AED 25-40 ($7-11), including airport surcharge of AED 20
- Rideshare (Uber/Careem): AED 20-35 ($5-10)
- Private transfer: AED 90-150 ($25-40)
Getting to Dubai
This is where most of the cost discussion matters. Dubai is a sprawling city, and your fare depends heavily on which part you are heading to:
- Deira / Dubai Creek: AED 80-130 ($22-35) by taxi, AED 60-100 ($16-27) by rideshare, AED 150-200 ($40-55) by private transfer
- Downtown Dubai / Burj Khalifa: AED 110-160 ($30-44) by taxi, AED 80-130 ($22-35) by rideshare, AED 180-250 ($49-68) by private transfer
- Dubai Marina / JBR: AED 130-180 ($35-49) by taxi, AED 100-150 ($27-41) by rideshare, AED 200-280 ($55-76) by private transfer
- Palm Jumeirah: AED 140-190 ($38-52) by taxi, AED 110-160 ($30-44) by rideshare, AED 220-300 ($60-82) by private transfer
Hidden costs to watch for
Salik tolls: The Sharjah-Dubai route passes through Salik toll gates at AED 4 each. Taxis add these to your meter fare. Rideshare includes them. Pre-booked transfers typically include tolls in their quoted price — confirm when booking.
Airport surcharge: Sharjah taxis add AED 20 for airport pickups. This is standard and unavoidable.
Traffic factor: During morning rush (7-9 AM) and evening rush (5-8 PM), the Sharjah-Dubai highway is notoriously congested. A 30-minute drive can become 90 minutes. Metered taxis cost more in traffic because the meter runs on time when the car is stationary. Pre-booked transfers with fixed pricing do not change regardless of traffic.
The math for budget travelers
If you chose SHJ specifically because flights were cheaper, here is the comparison that matters. A flight saving of $50-100 over flying into Dubai (DXB) can be partially offset by the AED 80-180 ($22-49) you spend getting to your Dubai hotel. For Deira or old Dubai, the savings usually hold. For Dubai Marina or Palm Jumeirah, run the numbers carefully — sometimes flying into DXB is cheaper overall.
