MSP - Minneapolis

Getting from MSP Airport to the City with Kids

Arriving at Minneapolis-Saint Paul with children does not have to be stressful if you plan your ground transport before landing. Here is what works and what to watch out for.

The Main Challenge

After a flight with kids, you are juggling carry-ons, checked bags, strollers, and possibly a car seat. The last thing you want is to stand in a rideshare queue on the upper level of Terminal 1 while managing a tired toddler. The ground transportation area at MSP is well-organized, but the walk from baggage claim to the pickup zones can feel long when everyone is running on empty.

Best Option: Pre-Booked Transfer with Child Seat

Booking a private transfer in advance lets you request the right child seat for your child's age and weight. Your driver meets you at arrivals, helps with luggage, and gets everyone settled. There is no walking to an upper-level pickup zone, no waiting for a driver to find you in a busy terminal, and no guessing whether the vehicle will be large enough for your bags plus a stroller. Expect to pay $40-60 to downtown Minneapolis with a child seat included.

Light Rail with Kids

The Blue Line is family-friendly in theory: strollers fit, and kids under 5 ride free. In practice, during rush hours the trains get crowded and navigating luggage plus a stroller can be difficult. If you are traveling light and your children are old enough to manage themselves, the Blue Line to downtown is a solid, affordable choice. Skip it if you have heavy luggage or very young children.

Taxis and Rideshares

Minnesota law requires children under 8 to use a car seat or booster unless they are over 4 feet 9 inches tall. Taxis and rideshares rarely carry child seats. If you bring your own, you will need to install it at the curb, which is doable but adds time and stress. If you do not have one with you, a pre-booked transfer with a child seat arranged in advance is the safest and easiest route.

Stroller and Luggage Tips

MSP has luggage carts available near baggage claim. Use one. Trying to push a stroller and pull two suitcases through the terminal is a recipe for frustration. If you have booked a private transfer, your driver will typically meet you close to the exit and help carry bags to the vehicle. Family restrooms with changing tables are available near baggage claim in both terminals.

Winter Considerations

Minneapolis winters are serious. From November through March, temperatures regularly drop well below freezing. If you are arriving in winter, the walk from the terminal to an outdoor pickup zone with small children can be uncomfortable. Pre-booked transfers often pick up from covered areas closer to the terminal exit, which helps. Dress the kids in layers and have coats accessible, not buried in a checked bag.
