MIA - Miami

Family and Kids Guide: MIA Airport Transfers

Miami is a major family vacation destination, and the airport handles millions of families every year. Getting from MIA to your resort or hotel with kids requires some planning around vehicle size and car seats.

Florida car seat law

Florida law requires children under 5 years old to be in a federally approved car seat or booster. Children ages 5 and under must be in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device. This applies to all vehicles, including taxis and ride-hailing cars. The law is enforced, and it is the passenger's responsibility to provide the seat in a taxi or Uber.

The car seat problem

Miami taxis do not carry child seats. Uber and Lyft offer a "Car Seat" option in the app, but availability is inconsistent -- you may wait 20-30 minutes or not find one at all. This leaves families with young children in a difficult position. Your options are:

1. Bring your own car seat from the flight and install it in the taxi or transfer vehicle. 2. Book a private transfer with a car seat requested in advance. This is the most reliable option. 3. Rent a car at the airport, where rental companies provide car seats for an additional fee ($10-15/day).

If you bring your own seat, inform the taxi dispatcher so they can assign a vehicle with enough trunk space.

Vehicle options for families

  • Standard taxi sedan: Fits 2 adults, 1-2 children, and 2 suitcases. Tight with a car seat installed.
  • Taxi van (on request): Some taxi dispatchers can call a van. Wait times vary. Ask at the stand.
  • Uber XL / Lyft XL: Larger vehicles, usually SUVs or minivans. More space for families but no guaranteed car seat.
  • Private transfer sedan: Fits 3 passengers and 2-3 bags. Works for a small family.
  • Private transfer SUV: Fits 4-5 passengers with luggage. Room for a car seat without losing all trunk space.
  • Private transfer minivan: Fits 5-6 passengers. Best for larger families, multiple car seats, and significant luggage.

Strollers and gear

MIA has elevators and ramps throughout, so navigating with a stroller inside the airport is manageable. Luggage carts are available for $6. When loading into a vehicle, fold the stroller and fit it in the trunk. SUVs and minivans handle strollers, beach gear, and car seats together without issue. A standard sedan trunk will struggle.

The ride to Miami Beach with kids

The drive from MIA to South Beach takes 20-40 minutes. During rush hour, it can stretch to an hour. The route crosses a causeway over Biscayne Bay, which at least offers a scenic distraction for kids. Bring snacks and a charged tablet or phone for entertainment, especially if you hit traffic.

Cost for families

A taxi to South Beach is $35 flat regardless of passengers (up to 5). An SUV private transfer runs $55-75. For a family of four, the per-person cost is comparable to many public transit options in other cities. The minivan transfer at $65-90 is the premium option but provides genuine comfort for families with young children and equipment.

Practical tips

Request a car seat when booking your transfer -- specify the child's age and weight. Bring water and snacks from the terminal. Have your hotel address ready on your phone. If you are going to a resort, call ahead and ask if they offer airport pickup -- some Miami Beach hotels provide shuttle service for guests.
