MIA - Miami

How Much Does It Cost to Get from MIA Airport to Miami

Miami International Airport sits on the mainland, about 8 miles west of Miami Beach. Getting to your destination involves crossing a causeway, and the cost varies significantly depending on your transport choice.

Flat taxi rates to Miami Beach

Miami-Dade County sets flat taxi rates from MIA to Miami Beach zones. These rates are posted at the taxi stand and are non-negotiable:

  • South Beach (south of 63rd St): $35 flat
  • Mid-Beach (63rd to 87th St): $44 flat
  • North Beach / Surfside / Bal Harbour: $50-55 flat
These rates include tolls. Tips are separate -- 15-20% is customary in the US. The flat rate applies only to Miami Beach destinations. Trips to downtown Miami and other mainland locations are metered.

Metered taxi rates

For destinations that are not covered by the flat rate:

  • Downtown Miami / Brickell: $22-28
  • Wynwood / Design District: $20-28
  • Coral Gables: $15-22
  • Coconut Grove: $18-25
  • Doral: $15-20
The meter starts at $2.50 and charges $0.40 per one-fifth of a mile. There is a $1 airport surcharge.

Uber and Lyft prices

Ride-hailing prices fluctuate based on demand:

  • South Beach: $20-35 (standard), up to $50+ during surge
  • Downtown Miami: $15-25
  • Fort Lauderdale: $40-65
  • Key Biscayne: $25-35
The main drawback is unpredictability. A ride that costs $22 at 2 PM might cost $48 at 6 PM on a Friday. If you value a fixed price, taxis or transfers are better.

Private transfer rates

  • South Beach (sedan): $40-55
  • South Beach (SUV): $55-75
  • Downtown Miami (sedan): $35-50
  • Fort Lauderdale (sedan): $70-100
  • Fort Lauderdale (SUV): $90-130
  • Keys / Homestead: $80-120
These prices are fixed at booking. No surge, no toll surprises, no tip ambiguity (some include tip, others do not -- check when booking).

Budget options

Metrorail: $2.25 to downtown Miami. Take the free MIA Mover to the station. Fast and reliable but does not reach Miami Beach.

Bus 150 (Miami Beach Airport Express): $2.25 to Miami Beach via Collins Avenue. Takes 40-60 minutes. Runs every 30 minutes during the day, less frequently at night.

Metrobus routes: Several local bus routes connect MIA to surrounding neighborhoods. Fares are $2.25. Slow but cheap.

Hidden costs to watch

Tolls on the Dolphin Expressway and causeways add $2-5 to rides. Taxis include tolls in the flat rate to Miami Beach. Uber and Lyft may add tolls as a separate line item. Parking in Miami Beach is expensive ($20-40/day at hotels), which matters if you are considering a rental car. Tipping taxi drivers 15-20% is expected -- the $35 flat rate to South Beach becomes effectively $40-42 with tip.

Time of day matters

Morning rush (7-9:30 AM) and evening rush (4-7 PM) add 15-30 minutes to any drive. Friday and Saturday evenings are especially slow on the causeways to Miami Beach. If you are arriving during these times, budget extra time but know that fixed-price fares remain the same regardless of traffic duration.
