LJU - Ljubljana

Getting from Ljubljana Airport to the City with Kids

Arriving at Ljubljana airport with children is genuinely manageable. LJU is one of Europe's smaller international airports, and the compact layout means less walking, less confusion, and a shorter path from plane to car.

The airport experience with kids

The terminal is small and navigable. After clearing passport control — which rarely takes more than 10-15 minutes — you collect luggage in a single baggage hall. Trolleys are available and free. The walk from baggage claim to the arrivals exit is short and flat, with no long corridors or complicated turns.

There are baby-changing facilities in the terminal restrooms. The arrivals hall has a small shop and cafe, but options are limited, so bring snacks for younger children if your flight arrives during off-hours.

Child seats

Slovenian law requires child seats for children under 150 cm tall. Standard taxis at the airport do not carry child seats. If you need one, your only reliable option is to request it when booking a private transfer in advance. Most transfer services in Slovenia can provide rear-facing infant seats, forward-facing toddler seats, or booster seats — but you must specify the type and confirm availability at booking time.

If you are bringing your own car seat, a private transfer or taxi will accommodate it. Let the driver know in advance so the right vehicle is assigned.

Choosing the right vehicle

For a family of four with a stroller and two suitcases, a standard sedan is tight. A minivan transfer gives everyone more room and makes loading luggage far less stressful. The price difference is typically 15-20 EUR — worth it after a long travel day with tired children.

If you are traveling with a group of 5 or more, a minivan is essential rather than optional.

Bus vs transfer with kids

The Arriva bus to Ljubljana is cheap (4-5 EUR per person) but not family-friendly. There is no guaranteed luggage space, no child seat, and the bus station in Ljubljana may leave you with another journey to your hotel. With a stroller, bags, and children, the bus creates more problems than it solves.

Timing matters

If you can, try to arrive during the day. The airport area is calm and safe at night, but children will be more comfortable when things are still open and staffed. For evening arrivals, having a driver waiting eliminates any uncertainty about what happens next.

The practical approach

Book a private transfer with a child seat request. Confirm the seat type matches your child's age and size. Choose a minivan if you have more than one child or heavy luggage. That combination gives you the smoothest path from the plane to your Ljubljana hotel — and lets the holiday start without a logistics headache.
