Taxi vs private transfer at Skiathos Airport — availability is everything

Last updated: March 2026

On most islands and cities, the taxi vs transfer debate is about price. On Skiathos, it's about whether you can actually get a taxi.

The Skiathos taxi problem

Skiathos has approximately 15-20 taxis serving the entire island. When a charter flight lands with 180 passengers, the math doesn't work. In peak season (July-August), taxis at the airport get claimed within minutes. If you're not among the first off the plane, you could wait 30-60 minutes for a taxi to return from its first fare.

Comparison

| Factor | Taxi | Private transfer | |---|---|---| | Price to town | 8-12 € | €15-22 | | Availability | Unreliable in peak season | Guaranteed | | Waiting time | 0-60 min depending on season | 0 min — driver waits | | Payment | Cash preferred | Pre-paid online | | Child seats | Not available | On request | | To remote hotels | Driver may not know location | Pre-programmed destination |

When the taxi works fine

Shoulder season (May, early June, late September, October): Fewer flights, fewer tourists, more available taxis. You'll find one at the rank without issues. At 8-12 € to town, it's cheap and quick.

Small flights: If your flight carries 50-80 passengers (ATR turboprop), the taxi demand is manageable.

When you need a transfer

Peak season (July-August): This is when charter flights from the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia pack the island. Pre-book or risk standing outside the airport for 30+ minutes in the sun.

Large groups/families: Getting 5-6 people into taxis requires multiple cars. A single van transfer is simpler.

Hotels on the north or west coast: Taxi drivers know Skiathos well, but a pre-programmed transfer to a remote villa or hotel avoids confusion.

Returning to the airport: On departure day, getting a taxi to the airport on time is stressful in peak season. Many hotels can arrange pickup, or pre-book a return transfer.

The price premium is small

Paying €15-22 for a transfer vs €8-12 for a taxi is only a €5-10 difference. On a holiday that probably costs €1,000+, the guaranteed availability and peace of mind are worth it.

Hotel pickup alternative

Many Skiathos hotels offer free or cheap airport transfers for guests. When booking your hotel, ask about this. It's often the best solution — free, reliable, and the hotel knows exactly when your flight arrives.

Our take

Shoulder season: Taxi is fine. Save your money. Peak season: Pre-book a transfer or confirm hotel pickup. Don't gamble on taxi availability.
