Getting from Skiathos Airport with kids and family

Last updated: March 2026

Skiathos is a fantastic family island — small, safe, beautiful beaches, and short distances everywhere. The airport transfer is the easy part.

The airport experience with kids

Kids will probably love arriving at Skiathos Airport. The landing approach is spectacular (and slightly terrifying for adults), flying low over Planespotters' Beach. The airport itself is tiny — you walk across the tarmac to a small building. No long corridors, no terminal trains, no escalators. From plane to outside in under 10 minutes.

Child seat situation

Greek law requires child restraints for children under 135 cm. In reality:

  • Taxis: Don't carry child seats. Greek taxis have a practical exemption.
  • Transfer: Child seats available on request. The safe choice for young children.
  • Bus: No child seats needed on public transport.
  • Rental car/scooter: Car rental agencies can provide child seats — book one in advance.

Best transport for families

| Situation | Best option | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Family of 3-4, going to town | Transfer with child seat | €15-22 | Safe, guaranteed car | | Family going to beach hotel | Transfer | €18-35 | Door-to-door to remote hotels | | Budget family, older kids | Bus | 2 € per person | Easy, scenic ride | | Family renting a car | Rental car from airport | €30-60/day | Freedom for the whole stay |

The bus with kids

The Skiathos bus is actually kid-friendly:

  • Short route (Airport to Koukounaries, 25-30 minutes end to end)
  • Scenic coastal road — kids enjoy the views
  • Costs just 2 € per person
  • Runs every 30 minutes in summer
The catch: it can get crowded in peak season, and juggling luggage + kids on a busy bus isn't relaxing. Fine for the ride back from the beach with just towels, less fun for the airport transfer with suitcases.

Why Skiathos is great for families

  • Short distances: Nothing is more than 12 km from the airport. Max car ride: 20 minutes.
  • Safe island: Low crime, friendly locals, easy to navigate.
  • Family beaches: Koukounaries (shallow, sandy), Troulos (calm water), Agia Paraskevi (organized with facilities).
  • Walkable town: Skiathos Town is car-free in the center — great for kids.

Practical tips for families

  • Book transfer in peak season. Taxi availability at JSI is unreliable when charter flights arrive.
  • Ask your hotel about pickup. Many family-friendly hotels on Skiathos offer free airport transfers.
  • Sun protection is essential. Even in May/June, the Greek sun is strong. Have hats, sunscreen, and water ready.
  • Rent a car for beach-hopping, but know that parking at popular beaches fills up by 11 AM in summer.
  • Boat trips to hidden beaches (like Lalaria) are a highlight. Water taxis from the harbor are fun for kids.
