Everything is close on Skiathos. The island is 12 km long, and the airport is 3 km from town. Costs are low — but availability is the real issue.
What a taxi is allowed to charge
Greek taxi fares are set nationally, not island by island. Under the unified tariff (ministerial decision 191290/2022, Government Gazette B' 3136 of 21 June 2022, in force since 23 June 2022, VAT included) the meter starts at 1.80 EUR and runs at 0.90 EUR per km on Tariff 1 or 1.25 EUR per km on Tariff 2 (00:00-05:00, and outside city limits), with a 4.00 EUR minimum fare, a 4.00 EUR airport surcharge and 0.39 EUR per bag over 10 kg.
Skiathos Town is only 3 km away, so the metered total is small either way, but which tariff band applies on an island route is a common source of disagreement. Ask for the meter and agree the basis before you set off. The tariff is revised by ministerial decision, so check the current one before you travel.
There is no fixed airport price on Skiathos and the airport does not publish one. The meter is the basis. If a driver quotes a flat figure instead, that is a negotiation, not a tariff.
The other two options
The local bus is the cheapest way into town and along the south coast (Airport - Town - beaches - Koukounaries). Neither the airport nor the operator publishes the fare in a form we could verify, so check the price posted at the stop and carry coins.
A pre-booked transfer is quoted per vehicle before you travel. It costs more than a metered taxi for the same 3 km, and that gap is the whole point: you are buying guaranteed availability. When 150 passengers land and there are 5 taxis, having one reserved for you has real value.
Walking is free but impractical — 35 minutes to town with no sidewalk in places.

Skiathos is a small Greek island, and prices reflect that:
- Everything is affordable compared to mainland European cities
- But taxi supply is limited — the island has roughly 15-20 taxis total
- Peak season (July-August) is when availability, not price, bites
- Shoulder season (May-June, September) is calmer
Money-saving tips
- The bus is genuinely good for Skiathos. It covers the main route and is the cheapest option by a distance. Use it.
- Ask your hotel about pickup. Many Skiathos hotels (especially those outside town) offer free or cheap airport transfers.
- Off-season flights (May, early June, late September) mean easier taxi access.
- Share a taxi with other arrivals going to Skiathos Town — it's common and drivers are used to it.
