Arriving at Mykonos Airport with family and kids

Last updated: February 2026

Mykonos is not primarily known as a family destination, but families do visit, and the airport experience requires more planning than you might expect for such a short transfer distance.

The airport with children

Mykonos Airport is tiny. There is one small terminal with minimal facilities. No family restroom, no nursing room, no children's play area, no real food options. The terminal is essentially a building you pass through.

This simplicity has an upside: you are out quickly. From landing to exit, expect 15-25 minutes. There is no long walk, no complex signage to navigate. With children, getting through fast is a positive.

The downside comes after exit. The outdoor waiting area for taxis has limited shade. In summer, with temperatures around 30-35 C and island wind, standing outside with children for an extended period is uncomfortable.

The taxi wait with kids

Mykonos has roughly 30-35 taxis for the whole island. During peak season, the airport wait can be 20-60 minutes. With tired children, this wait is the single biggest pain point.

There is no shaded waiting area, no nearby cafe to sit in, and no way to predict how long the wait will be. One taxi comes, takes the family at the front of the line, and then you wait for the next one.

This is where a pre-booked transfer changes the experience completely. Your car is waiting. You walk out, find the driver, and leave in under 5 minutes. For families with young children, this is not a luxury; it is practical parenting.

Child seats

Mykonos island taxis do not carry child seats. The island is small and trips are short, so many parents skip the car seat. However, Mykonos roads are narrow, winding, and shared with ATVs, scooters, and other hazards. A car seat provides real safety value even for a 10-minute drive.

If you need a child seat, book a transfer and request it. Bringing your own portable car seat also works.

Distances on Mykonos

Everything on Mykonos is close:

  • Mykonos Town: 4 km, 10 minutes
  • Ornos: 3 km, 8 minutes
  • Platis Gialos: 6 km, 15 minutes
  • Elia Beach: 10 km, 20 minutes
The short distances mean the drive itself is never the problem. Getting into the car is.

The bus option for families

A bus runs from the airport to Mykonos Town for about 2 EUR. If you are traveling with one child and light luggage, this works for getting to town. But the bus does not go to beach areas, runs infrequently, and has no luggage storage beyond what you can carry. For a family with full luggage, it is impractical.

Practical tips for families

  • Book your airport transfer before arriving. This is the single most useful thing you can do.
  • Bring sun hats and water for the possibility of any outdoor wait.
  • Consider renting an ATV or car for getting around the island, but pick it up from town the next day, not from the airport with tired kids.
  • Many family-oriented villas and hotels offer airport pickup. Ask when booking your accommodation.
  • The island is windy. Hats with chin straps are practical for young children.

The bottom line for families

Mykonos is one of those places where a pre-booked transfer is almost essential for families during peak season. The taxi shortage is not a minor inconvenience; it is a structural reality that makes waiting with children genuinely unpleasant. The distances are short and the fares are modest. Spend the extra 5-15 EUR to have a car waiting.
