Itami Airport is different from most airports in this guide — it has a strict curfew. Understanding this saves you from unpleasant surprises.
The curfew
Itami Airport operates under noise restrictions due to its proximity to residential areas. The airport closes for operations at approximately 9 PM for departures and 9:30 PM for the last arrivals. There are no red-eye or overnight flights. This means truly late-night arrivals are rare and only happen due to flight delays.
Last transport times
| Transport | Last Departure from Itami | Notes | |-----------|--------------------------|-------| | Osaka Monorail | ~11:15 PM | Final train to Hotarugaike | | Limousine Bus (Umeda) | ~9:20 PM | Check exact time for your route | | Limousine Bus (Namba) | ~9:30 PM | Varies by season | | Limousine Bus (Kyoto) | ~8:40 PM | Earlier cutoff | | Taxis | Always available | Queue at the rank |
The monorail runs well after the airport's last arrivals, so you should not have a problem catching a train. The limousine buses, however, align closely with last flight arrivals — a delayed flight could mean missing the last bus.
If your flight is delayed
Delayed flights at Itami are uncommon but possible, especially during typhoon season (August-October). If you arrive after buses have stopped:
1. Taxis are always available at the rank and will take you anywhere 2. Pre-booked transfer drivers will wait regardless of your delay — they track the flight 3. The monorail typically runs until after 11 PM, giving you a buffer
Evening taxi costs
Japanese taxis apply a 20% late-night surcharge between 10 PM and 5 AM. Since most Itami arrivals are before 9:30 PM, this surcharge rarely applies. But if your flight delay pushes you past 10 PM:
| Destination | Regular Fare | After 10 PM (+20%) | |-------------|-------------|--------------------| | Umeda | JPY 5,000-6,000 / EUR 30-36 | JPY 6,000-7,200 / EUR 36-43 | | Namba | JPY 6,000-7,500 / EUR 36-45 | JPY 7,200-9,000 / EUR 43-54 |
The practical reality
Itami's curfew means this is one of the few airports where late-night arrivals are almost a non-issue. If you are worried about a delay, a pre-booked transfer gives you certainty — your driver adjusts to your actual arrival time, no questions asked.
